I installed Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for my eldest son. He thinks it's amazing and the graphics look fantastic. He plays it using a wireless Saitek gamepad. it basically looks like a console game and can be used with just the gamepad.

Small caveat: a bug in the games means you can't use the right hand joystick on the gamepad for special moves. hopefully this will get fixed soon.

As reven said, NFSMW is a great arcade racing game. Amazing graphics (if your graphics card is up to it)

reven Wrote:MAME is a emulator for arcade games, so street fighter, marvel vs capcom, the classic metal slug etc.

all emulators need roms, there is little point in a PS2 emulator without roms, but last time i checked the PS2 emulators were pretty rubbish (too much horsepower needed to emulate them).

roms are pretty easy to find, and i think in most cases you are allowed to download the roms legally if you own a copy of the game, ie you can download SNES roms if you own the SNES game etc.

Thanks for the explanation. I have a N64 emulator I love I just wasn't sure what MAME was. With older systems like that SNES, Genesis etc. I don't know why the companies would care anyway since they don't make the games anymore. The only people who would be losing money are people selling used games.

I hadn't played many of those games in a long time. Wish I could find a good version of Perfect Dark though. That was the best game on N64 we used to play that and Bond constantly when I was in college.

I don't know if you could call it console type games, but I have played GTR2 (GT racing) and "RACE" - The official WTCC game (touring cars), using a Sony PS2 joypad and an mce remote to navigate the menus. The only thing that didn't work right away was pressing 'escape' from the remote to jump out of the game to go back to the menu, and, of course, setting up the joypad the way I wanted...

Nintendo has been re-releasing a lot of vintage games onto newer consoles. A lot of GBA games are just SNES games re-packaged, and I think n64 games are now being put on the DS.

I read a long time ago that the Wii would have an online store where you could download games from all past consoles and play them. So they still make $ on them.

Hmm I did not know that. Still I don't know that they would be thinking of doing that if it wasn't for that fact that people are playing those games through emulators anyway and they still aren't losing money from the people who would just go to ebay or someplace like that and buy the game for the a fraction of the cost used from some third party.

Emulators have had similar impact on the gaming companies as mp3s had on music companies--a good impact for gamers. People were downloading via napster long before there was an itunes store, and such businesses were only reluctantly accepted by the music industry because they had no choice.

But the difference between someone buying a used game (taking away from legally downloaded and paid for Wii content) is that the developers did get paid for the used game the first time it sold (unless they really are backups of games you own). When someone downloads less-than-official ROMs, well, developers never got paid for that incarnation of the game. That means you've got three legit supplies--used cartridages (not really competition for Wii roms unless they have that particular old working console), repackaged games, and legit Wii Roms. Then the un-official roms artifically drive up the supply and drive down the profits from bringing back vintage games. So while those unofficial roms may have shown the developers that there is a market for vintage games in the first place, if they continue to thrive, they'll hurt that market while it's trying to get up and going. That would be unfortunate.

I'm going to go think about that while I'm playing PocketNES on my GBA. Wink

Just a little update for those interested.

I bought my kids Need For Speed Most Wanted and Rayman Raving Rabbits for Christmas. NFS Most Wanted has nice graphics and game play is pretty good, but you can't go completely keyboard-less when accessing the menus. Gameplay can be done with a controller though. Also, Most Wanted does not support any widescreen modes, which is really annoying if you're playing with a widescreen monitor or TV. There are some hacks that will stretch the screen to fill your screen, but none that I can find that will actually use the widescreen to see more landscape. Bummer.

Rayman Raving Rabbids is fantastic. It has native widescreen support, looks great and is hilarious, though I must say some of the levels we've played so far are pretty darn hard and we aren't even that far into it. The game has great gamepad support though you do unfortunately need one to exit though - or at least I think. (I might need to read the manual though - I had to Alt-F4 to exit) Whatever the case, the game is a kick in the butt - highly recommended!
