This one should have several channel changes. Interestingly, one of them worked perfectly, filling the screen completely. The other 2(or 3) did not.

to me that looks like it is broadcast in pillarbox. what does the show look like if you record it and open it in another program(like WMP)?

try watching a football game on it, I am pretty sure that all of those are widescreen.

Yes, I wondered about that also. This would be a good way to check.

The football game was the one that worked fine. So is it just a big jumbled mess of broadcast formats? It seems to change program to commercial, channel to channel, etc. Perhaps it's simply the way things are broadcast if you see nothing in the logs. Thanks for looking.

yes its a big jumbled mess of broadcast formats, what gave you that impression? (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) and then they can choose to broadcast in whatever aspect ratio they want.

I believe widescreen is part of the HD standard (720 and up) so if they have a 4:3 program they have to broadcast in a pillarbox, but for 480i/p they just use the entire resolution for whatever aspect ratio they are using, (except 2.35:1 there are bars on top and bottom of that) and set a flag to indicate what the aspect ratio is.

this has been discussed at length with regards to DVDs.
