AC3 support with the SPDIF output

My MediaMVP has an SPDIF output. Should I be able to play AC3 sound?

I tried playing a movie with AC3 and set the home theater amp to "auto". I got a stereo signal. Does AC3 mean that I the Amp should detect Dolby digital?
