Can anyone tell me what type of app to use so I can compress my MPEG-2 recordings and put them on a dvd? I recorded the recent fight and it is over 10 gigs (almost 3 hours) at the highest setting!

Thanks.

Most DVD creation software will recompress the video automatically for you if its too big to fit on a DVD.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 is a good suite of applications that does what Sub says above - use the "My DVD" application to create your DVD and specify a level of compression.

Would ULEAD 4 do this type of burning? I don't have Roxio. Do you have any steps that are pretty basic in most apps?

You may also want to think about splitting the file and putting it on several different DVD's. MPEG-2 is already compressed, so if you compress it again, you will get more compression artifacts. You could split the 9 gig file into 3 separate 3 gig files and put them on 3 different discs.

To maintain quality split the file and use three DVD-5s or two DL DVDs.

Or re-encode to a lower bitrate using WinFF(freeware that uses the ffmpeg mpeg encoder). Use a bitrate of 7800 to 8000.

That WinFF is pretty cool. I am ftp'n a large file right now so I can test it. It shows a DVD vob option, have you ever used this option? Would you be able to give me a couple of hints on how to use this. The file is a 6 gig movie. So it is prolly going to take around an hour to ftp.

Unfortunately WinFF only creates a vob and does not create the video_ts folder required to make an iso, which is what is needed for Burning a compliant DVD.

To author (create the video_ts folder) you can try GUI for DVD Author (Freeware). Once you have the video_ts folder you can burn to DVD using Imgburn (Freeware).

Hey bits,

Thanks for the info! I am a friggin noob to this. I am kind of following on this but still in the dark. I need a lot of hand holding. Would you be able to write some steps regarding this? Or what do you think is the best way to get my files on a single dvd without it being very low quality. I am looking into those programs listed above right now!

Thanks!

If you are will to spend a little money you might try ConvertxToDVD. I am pretty sure you can just load your video file into it and tell it to burn the DVD. It will reduce the file size (re-encode), author (create the video_ts folder), create the iso image and burn. ConvertxToDVD has free trial and it might be work giving it a try.

I can walk you through the other software but I will need to do that later today.
