Do a search and some reading. There are lots of possibilities. The 500 is a resource hog (IRQs, I/O Memory, etc). It does not like PCI-e motherboards (and hates ASUS) because you can't set aperture.

That doesn't mean it can't work.
The two normal options are to set AGP Aperture to match the amount of memory on the video card (this doesn't apply to PCI-e, unfortunately). The second is to Reset ESCD or Reset Configuration Data in the BIOS. This goes by various names but does a one time reallocation of resources at boot (at least that what it is supposed to do, it doesn't always). Swapping around PCI slots should also reallocate resources. It's not usually IRQ but Memory location that seems to be the problem. The 500 needs two large contiguous blocks of upper memory to function. Switching to an older, less powerfull video card might work too.
