So, if you're going to have somekind of wireless keyboard, what's the big deal to ALT-TAB to your favorite chat program (or a web-based one like Meebo) and be done with it?
You could even have GB-PVR windowed at the time of chat, so you can see both (assuming TV is big/HD enough). Style PIP.

ALT-TAB won't help with an MVP and I've seen people type SMS messages with amazing speed. Personally I hate typing like that, but I do see the utility of the request.

Ok, I'm not an MVP user, so I wouldn't know. Still, sending SMS with phone, is one thing, but doing real chat with a remote control? ok, enjoy Smile

it's just like using your mobile for mp3 playback, it's possible but still the same a lil' bit stupid if you don't want to recharge your mobile every day Wink

or maybe just a message saying "someone is trying to contact you", then if you want to, you can pop to the pc upstairs and answer the call or reply to the message, or just ignore it.

I use the voip on yahoo messenger/ Messenger live instead of using the phone, The only way I know if I have got a message or a call is to turn the speakers on the PC all the way up, or to keep checking every now and then.

To have a message come up on the MVP would be great, In my opinion

Wouldn't it be better to build a plugin for Miranda-IM for instance??
That way all protocols would be supported...

No one I know use Yahoo, where I live "everybody" uses msn.
That does not mean I vote "No" (why should I deny others??) but I have no use for it.

Skype with video over the MVP would be excellent. The instant messaging part of it does not interest me that much but being to make/receive calls from my TV/MVP would be excellent. I think the limiting factor at the moment would be the performance on the MVP. I'm not sure if it could display the camera's video smooth enough. A IP webcam with microphone would then be all you needed. Obviously you could put different options in order to not get bothered during a movie etc. Its really no different than having your phone ring.
