mpeg-2 to dvd

I am not sure if the software does both conversions to get it to a DVD file? I guess too much conversion would cause this?

When I use the software I choose to create a DVD file. I don't choose to convert to a divx file first, then a DVD file. I will always choose to record in high quality for futurre sports recordings.

The name "DivXtoDVD" made me think you were converting from archived files. Is DivXtoDVD (ConvertXtoDVD) reencoding your mpeg files?

I've had no problems where things come out "blurry." The one thing I don't like it that the program uses interlaced encoding. I only see that when I'm using WinDVD or PowerDVD for some reason. That's where I get the 'comb' effect at the edge of the moving images. But I also get that with DVDs that come out of Pinnacle Studio. On any set-top DVD player, the DVDs produced from this program look as good as it does on cable, others have commented to me on that as well. Reading on the ConvertXtoDVD forums, there's no way to change it to progressive encoding. They claim there is no other program that does progressive encoding.

The only time the DVDs come out crappy is when I'm putting 3 - 1 hour shows on one DVD to take on the road but that's expected because the bitrate is around 1mbps.

I don't know about your settings. I've used both the default Medium and High settings in GBPVR and produced great DVDs with that program.

Also, the DivXtoDVD is now the ConvertXtoDVD program.

I am still clueless to what is causing this blurriness? My file looks OK on the monitor? Just when I transfer it to DVD? Do you think I can just burn the file in the same format (mpeg2) straight to a DVD? What would I use to compress the mpeg2 file at a lower bit rate? WinFF?


I guess I'll look around and try NERO Vision. Heard thats ok to work with.

Burning the file straight to DVD gets into to a whole 'nother area of problems because there is no standard. The standard is the IFO/VOB structure that any Digital Video Disc is created in. I've had very mixed results otherwise. It depends on the file sizes and your DVD player. I'm not saying it won't work, but it's unlikely.

I do know this, any single file over 2 GB in size that you want to put on a DVD disc, the DVD will need to be burned in UDF format and cannot be burned in ISO format. In Nero, instead of selecting "DVD-ROM (ISO)" select "DVD-ROM (UDF)" instead.

What would I use to compress the mpeg2 file at a lower bit rate? WinFF?

I can't speak for or recommend another program to compress files only because I haven't needed to make smaller MPEG files. Sorry. VideoHelp.Com or Free-Codecs.Com would be the first two places I would look to find such a program.

I agree with Htv. Rejig can get you from 12GB to 9GB then you can make 2 DVDs or a DualLayer DVD.

I forgot to mention. After you have two 4.5 GB files, or however you break them up, make sure that the DVD authoring program (ConvertXtoDVD) doesn't reencode. Some will and some won't. I don't know if ConvertXtoDVD does or not. I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory which I set not to reencode.
