what is easiest route to hdtv

we receive the bbc hd broadcasts out of crystal palace, london, and although i can record them to .ts files with absolutely no problems - i have no luck in watching hdtv thru gbpvr and huge difficulty playing the files.

my best attempt at playing them was after downloading zoom player and other stuff it wanted to download and add to my system and, to be fair, it was pretty good quality. but then my gbpvr settings went all over the place until i removed zoom and all its extra bits it insisted on downloading and glueing to my system.

so, where now folks?

and what else i wonder? i use media player classic for all my video files and there seems to be no difference in play back after installing this. also, why does gbpvr not display hd on that channel? it shows all other channels. a little guidance for a newbiw would be helpful.

Ah, sorry - I was skim reading. Usually HDTV questions are from the US or Australia where its all MPEG2 based, and quite different from the HDTV trial being run by the BBC.

From memory you need the Cyberlink H.264/AVC Decoder installed to view this channel, but the CPU requirements are also very high, so you'll need a very grunty PC.

There is only very minimal support for this type of HD in GB-PVR, but hopefully with this decoder installed you should be able to watch live tv or playback a completed recording. You wont be able to timeshift live tv (ie, pausing live tv), and wont be able to watch recordings that are still in progress.

You need a decoder, not an encoder.

I bought the cyberlink store as an enhancement pack for PowerDVD.

Very few of the h264 available support the AVC profile used by the BBC trial. From memory, CoreAVC was another pay decoder that supported it, but I'm not sure if anyone got smooth playback with that one. Elecard also have a commerical one.

CoreAVC works for me and I can view BBCHD from within GB-PVR. Pretty choppy but I think that's the signal rather than my machine (it's an A64 3500).

Nope its your pc, the BBCHD broadcast uses h.264 which is alot more hungry cpu wise for playback. You need a dual core processor before the playback becomes more smooth even then some people are reporting problems. Also most of the BBCHD content is 1080i/p stuff, I record my stuff then re-encode to mpeg2 at 720p as my cpu is only a 2ghz duron. This playsback fine but obviously the re-encoding takes time.

i've now found that ffdshow-rev993_20070304 decodes .ts files brilliantly in media player classic. now how to link that in to live playback in gbpvr is the next problem! any suggestions folks?

*lol* Usually it's the other way around - people having installed ffdshow, and asking "how do I make it *not* being used in gbpvr". Cause it's usually pretty aggressive in taking over everything...
