Good point. Always put the amp as close to the antenna as possible.
Certainly before any splitters or combiners and before any long cable runs if possible. Get good quality cable also.

For HD signals, you can get a UHF antenna at Radio Shack (assuming you're in the US) for US$25. A lot of people can't put them outside because of neighborhood restrictions, so they put them in the attic. I personally have a UHF/VHF one that I bought off a guy from work for $20 and mounted it on the roof and it works pretty good. It'll work even better if I chop down the tree that's growing into it Wink

A friend of mine bought an antenna at Home Depot and put it in his attic (2 story) house and gets good reception. A lot of it also depends on where the transmitters are and stuff, though it sounds like you've got a good handle on it from antennaweb.

Some stations are VHF as well, so check on antenna web to make sure you get the right type.

I built myself a Bowtie (like DB2) for about $8 in materials then $15 for the pole to put it outside. It works great picking up stations >35miles away. Though it is designed for UHF, I pick up some of the higher end VHF channels as well.

BTW...the FCC has laws in effect so that HOAs can't prevent you from installing an outside OTA antenna. I don't know for sure where it is written, but a quick google search should find it for those in need.
