A few people have expressed interest in my latest project, and I told them I would post my results and pics here in the forums for them to see. Well... here they are.

This is the entire inside of the case. Machine is not quite done here, wiring is still messy and not complete. It is a micro ATX board, that will give you an idea of how big the case is. I really like the layout, and the compartmentalization of the case. I went with rounded IDE cables (to aid with cooling) that and I had them laying around as leftovers from other peoples builds. The single expansion card is my PVR150MCE and just to the right of that is the output header for the GeForce 6150 on board video.

Here is more of the motherboard compartment, along the right you see both of the 120mm fans that do 90% of the cooling for the case. They are both 3 speed fans, and right now they are both set to "low"... which is you guessed it, SILENT! A little more motherboard detail and the Zalman cooler. When I was readying the machine it was sitting in my spare bedroom/computer room (which is where it is in this picture). With AMD's "Cool 'n' Quiet" enabled, it was idling about 27*C with the Zalman spinning at ~1800RPM's, which was silent. The case is so quiet, that 6 feet away, I can't ever hear a defrag running!!! Again wiring is not complete, but you get the idea. The other 10% of the case is cooled by a single 80mm fan in the power supply. Certainly does an adequate job, as the optical drive doesn't make much heat (idle 99.9999%) of the time and there is very little load on the psu to heat it up much.

Back of the case, on the right is my PVR150MCE and on the left is the output header for the GeForce 6150. The board as has 4 USB 2.0 ports on the back as well as firewire. There is 3 USB headers on the board as well as another firewire header. Plus there is a bracket in the motherboard box that would let you add 2 more USB ports, I didn't really need them, or want the extra wiring in the case. Its not too often that you see DVI on a motherboard either! The output header has S-Video (which I am currently using) as well as Component Video out. The wires you see running out between the header and the capture card go to the Zalman fan mate, lets me change the speed of the CPU externally.

Of the 4 DVD-RW drives that I have, every single one is BEIGE! Most of my cases have doors to hide the optical drive. I didn't want something that ugly fouling up the good looks of my new case. Not to mention all the logos on the door of them anymore. I pulled the faceplate and door plate off of one of them, went out side and put 5 or 6 light coats of silver spray paint on them. I should also add that I didn't want the logo's showing through the paint, so my first two coats were white. I didn't sand it, or use an adhesion promoter. I was worried that the silver might chip or flake but it hasn't so far. The drive blends well with the case, the spray job is not perfect, but unless your within 12" of it, you can't really tell. Plus, having the drive match helped the Wife-Acceptance-Factor.

And the madness continues...

Front of the case, already installed in the entertainment center. Power light (blue ring around the power button) is pretty subtle, doesn't jump out at you while watching something. The hd activity light is small, and it doesn't seem to bother me either. Funny story: My brother in law comes over to help me move the entertainment center (yeah its THAT heavy!) and it took both of us to get the new machine into the shelf. The front drop down is to low to let me slip the machine into the shelf. We had to take down the front pegs to the shelf and rest the shelf on the tv, I held the pc and he hooked up everything and then I slid the machine into the shelf. After that I held the shelf up while he put the pegs back in it. My wife had just gotten home when we were doing this... she was laughing hysterically at us, funny thing is, we didn't find it that funny at the time!

Done! I like how it all turned out, the case ties in well with the rest of my entertainment center. Before anyone asks; no... we don't have kids yet. Smile They are of my niece and nephew, one is my sister in law. Sitting in the Entertainment Center, it does run a little warmer. CPU is about 38*C, which is fine. Under 100% load for a few minutes, it will warm to about 41*-42*C. Which I can live with, the old pvr ran 45*C all the time.

I plan on using it for a week or so, and then I will come back and post my thoughts on the mother board and performance. So far I like it, it built up really easily and gave me no issues.

I had a similiar problem with my entertainment center & the new TV I bought.
I just took out the shelf & drilled new holes so everything could fit.

You might want to think about doing that in case you need to pull that PC out.

The plan is to eventually replace the TV with something a little bigger than 27"'s... Big Grin

Well I said I would come back and post again...

So far so good, I LOVE the motherboard. I am very happy that I went with a Athlon64 versus a Sempron. A Sempron would have been fine, but the Athlon64 gives it a little more grunt. I use parallel processing for comskip now and the other day I was watching one recording, while it was recording/processing something else and there was never even a hiccup! Needless to say that I am pleased with the entire build.

Now... if only I had the cash to spring for a PVR500, I currently only have 1 tuner in it, and multiple would be nice. Someday.... Big Grin

6 months later...

Still loving it! I have since added another PVR150MCE and changed out the remote to an MCE remote.

The machine has enough grunt to be recording two shows, com-skipping another while simultaneously playing another. No hiccups! I added the second tuner about a month ago, while it was open I blew out the case. Being that far up off the ground, and surrounded by hard surfaces there was very little dust, only a tiny amount at the base of the CPU fan.

Needless to say, I am still very pleased! The second tuner and change over to a remote that works correctly all the time really brought up the WAF! Smile

Anyone want to buy a remote wonder? Big Grin

the case and MB definitely rock. Mine is still running great. Granted, the second HTPC works excellently too.

Ok, I am going to build my first HTPC that is dedicated at a TV. It also will serve the others on the network, but I want the rapid response and ease of direct to the TV instead of through the MVP. I currently only have a Std. Def 32" but I would like some options for the future. I have looked at this thread and like what I see. I am looking for the best, least expensive case that will function quietly for this. It looks like the NSK2400 is about $100. Is this about the lowest I would expect to pay for a case and PS? I see lower stuff, but I want to know it is quiet and well built. I can get a M2NPV-VM and 3600+ for about $155. Does that sound like the best bang for the buck? I am also looking at 1 gig of RAM. It says the MB can use DDR2 800, but I can get what looks like a good deal on a dual channel kit of DDR2 533 for $65. Will this work? Any suggestions will be a big help. Also, I will have at least one pvr150 and a Twinhan 1025 DVB-S card in it.

That hardware should work just fine. Ram speed won't make a huge difference for you so if it were me I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the case, IMHO its the best case in the price range. It comes with a GOOD (and quiet) PSU. I run both my 120's on low, and the case runs cool. Keep in mind that it is not a tool less case. The hard drives are mounted in a manner to cool them and keep them quiet. That being said you have to pull 8 screws to change a hard drive, some people don't like that but I don't have an issue with it. Its an HTPC and I have only opened once in the past year, so to me its not a big deal.

You will need to either buy a silver optical drive or paint the faceplate on one you have now.

Either way, I am very happy with the case, if I had to do it all over again, I'd buy another one. Smile Antec also makes one called the Fusion that I might use when I build another one. Big Grin

Antec sells "B Stock" cases on their site, 1/2 price might be worth the risk!!! Third from the bottom.
