Hello,
I was thinking about what happens when drive space is low. I'm currently using mythtv but there are things I don't like about it and that are really confusing. I'm getting help but I plan on using a separate computer to try a Windows PVR.

Anyway, my problem is not being able to figure out what is going on when old recordings are left on the drive. I can view them but can't figure out how to burn them now.

What does GB-PVR do when recordings are being left on the drive? When you get low on disk space, how does GB-PVR handle it? Does it start to delete shows? If you leave recordings on for a long time (for e.g., 2 mths), can you still burn them on dvd?

I plan on buying a large drive to be used (on the Windows pvr computer) so this issue might be moot but just say, hypothetically speaking, what would happen if you run really low on disk space?

I admit, I didn't search yet for this issue but I'm not really sure what to put in as search terms. I hope it's okay to create a new post for this topic.

I don't think that gbpvr does anything to manage disk space.

the Video Archive plugin does some things to help. I use it to move all recordings > 30 days old from the recording drive across to the archive drive.

when you schedule a session recordings, you can set it to only keep the last x episodes of that show.

there is a showburner plugin that enables you to burn mpg to dvd.

You can use something like zprocess / dirmon to monitor folders and automatically convery mpg to xvid if you wnst to keep the shows but save some space.

Thank you, ged, those are useful things to know. In fact, it will probably answer other questions I might have, too. But, I am wondering what gbpvr does if you don't do anything. If you continue to record (in particular, scheduled recordings) but don't move them or delete them from the drive, what does gbpvr do? It has to do something.

I think when I was first testing on a small drive - it just gave up recording when the drive was full. This was quite a few versions ago, but I don't recall reading of any changes.

Thanks, Martin. I think that would be acceptable. If there's no space, I can only think of either deleting or just stopping recording altogether. I don't know of anything else that can happen. I'm having trouble figuring out what is going on with mythtv which is what I am currently using to record tv. I want to compare a Windows pvr and I'm more familiar with Windows (and so is some other ppl who would be using the program). That's why I wish to know what happens. I am hoping it's not as frustrating and easier to deal with.

pvrdude, I would imagine that it would just stop recording. Also, here's an old thread about mythtv vs gbpvr that you might identify with http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...ght=mythtv

Believe it or not, a LOT of us that use GBPVR have tried out mythtv, and have decided to stick with GBPVR. Smile

actually i think someone wrote a script once that if it detected < x GB of disk would delete the oldest recordings until there was > y space available. or maybe it was a dream...

I wouldn't want it to do that. My oldest recordings are the very things I want to keep (but haven't got round to burning to DVD or whatever).

One of the plug-ins (you might as well read through all of them Big Grin ) will let you specify, per show name, how many episodes to keep maximum and how many minimum if space is needed.
