I have GB-PVR set up with a Pinnacle HDTB Pro USB Stick and it works great. I am trying to transition over to the television and want to make sure that the image is full screen. Right now, when I view live TV there are some channels that are displayed in a smaller box with a large blank border in the middle of the screen. I've tried setting the screen resolution to 640x480 and most channels will be full screen then but there are some that still display within a smaller box on the screen. Can anybody give me any clues as to how I can get all channels to display in full screen? Thanks.

Can you post a screenshot?

What video decoder are you using?

Here is the screen shot.
I'm using the Nvidia Purvideo decoder.

I got this too when I watched recorded .dvr-ms and can't use F7 to change ratio; however, watching live-tv it got full screen and F7 is usable.

elbryyan, two things:

1) make sure you've explicitly selected the nvidia decoder for playback in the config app rather than relying on 'system default', otherwise the auto aspect ratio control will not work.

2) in the nvidia decoder settings, make sure you have the aspect ratio control set to 'anamorphic'

Actually, I'm also wondering about the broadcast itself.

The above picture would be correct if the channel is transmitting a 16:9 widescreen broadcast, with some pillar boxed 4:3 content (black bars added to transmission on left and right by broadcaster), and you're viewing this 16:9 broadcast on a 4:3 screen (black bars added top and bottom by GB-PVR to letterbox broadcast into correct aspect ratio).

I was wondering this also but when viewing a broadcast that I think is broadcast in 16:9, ie CBS march maddnes I only see the letterbox on top and bottom and not on the right and left. This particular channel from the screen shot is My20 in Houston, Tx. I'm not sure what they boradcast in. I will try the anamorphic on the decoder settings and let you know.

I have explicitly selected the Nvidia decoder and am using VR9 Full screen exclusive and not VR7.

I think this is being transmitted as 16:9, but contains black bars as part of the video (ie added by broadcasters). They often do this when they want to transmit 4:3 video as 16:9.

Try pressing F7 until you get to 'remove pillarbox' to see if it looks correct. This trims the sides off a 16:9 picture (which if this is the case, will trim the black left and right bars).

I've tried hitting F7 but I don't ever see an option that says 'remove pillarbox'. I see remove letterbox which results in the top and bottom bars being removed. If I change the aspect ration on the general tab on configuration to 16:9 then I see the screen still has left and right bars. I'll post a screenshot later. I'll continue to mess around with the settings to see if I can get it to full screen.

that is easy enough to fix, I am guessing you are using the overlay renderer, which does not support aspect transformations off the screen (negitave values) which is what you need to do "remove pillarbox". try changing your renderer to VMR9, or anything other than overlay.

to be completely honest, I am not exactly sure what that aspect ratio setting changes... sub?
