Sorry, the aspect ration name was called "center cut" not 'remove pillarbox'. You need to be using one of the VMR renderers to get this option. Overlay will not list it as an option.

Quote: I see remove letterbox which results in the top and bottom bars being removed. If I change the aspect ration on the general tab on configuration to 16:9 then I see the screen still has left and right bars.
Yeah, this sounds normal. As I said above, GB-PVR was adding the black bars at the top and bottom so that your 16:9 video would have the correct aspect ratio on your 4:3 screen. When you change you TV setting to 16:9, it removes these bars assuming your TV is widescreen. You're seeing black bars on the left and right because this part of the actual video being broadcast - it hasnt been added by GB-PVR.

O_o, then what do aspect ratio settings do?? or is that just for "auto"

What do you mean? I dont understand the question.

This person situation only seem confusing because of the way the broadcaster was transmitting a 16:9 video that happened to contain black bars on the left and right as part of the video (not artificially added by something on their PC).

sorry. here is the question in an easier form.

from what you said it seems like GB-PVR has two separate methods of changing the aspect ratio. there is the common F7 aspect ratios; and to my knowledge these work by having settings for where GB-PVR should place each edge of the video image relative to the edge of the screen (well wherever it is rendering the video). Then you mentioned the tv shape setting, which seems to perform additional transformations (what you said above, adding/removing black bars). this seems to be in conflict with the other aspect ratio settings.

SO, my question is, do the things you mentioned about the TV shape setting adding black bars only get applied with you use the "auto" aspect ratio setting?

yeah, I know, I thought we got him straightened out, with the center cut setting that he should use.

The TV Shape setting doesnt do any extra aspect ratio control, but rather is a variable considered when deciding what the auto aspect ratio should look like.

F7 manually cycles through the config.xml aspect ratios.

The "auto" aspect ratio is a special case that uses the current video aspect ratio info + tv shape setting to device which of the aspect ratios to use. For example, if the user is viewing a 16:9 video and their TV Shape is set to 4:3, then it'll switch to the defined "letterbox" aspect ratio. If the user is viewing a 16:9 video and their TV Shap is set to 16:9, then it'll switch to the defined "fill" aspect ratio. etc...

I've tried using the 'center cut' option and it seems to help a little but there are still the left and right bars dispalyed and the picture seems to be slightly strecthed vertically.
