I have been kicking around VMR9 or VMR7 to try out, because I can. What are the advantages and disadvantages of them versus 9 custom?

Ok, I just got the M2NPV-VM board. 2 days from New Egg. Cool. I am a little bummed though. The board supports spdif, but does not come with the header. Asus lists it for $10 on their site but lists it as out of stock. They are on fleabay but cost $25 with shipping. Then, when I checked back at New Egg, I found that the combo with the processor has dropped $10 since I bought it, 3 days ago.:mad:

From what I can tell, there is no kind of audio out except for the minijacks. With an adapter, can I turn one into a regular RCA type audio out so at least I can hook it up to my stereo???? From the earlier posts it looks like this would work, but now I am not taking anything for granted. At this point I might be pulling out my logitech 5.1 system from the office and move it to the living room. That sucks. The book shows the pinout for the header, does anyone know how to go about making my own spdif out, or are there other parts (like chips) that I will need?

I am sure it will work out, but I am just getting off to a bad start.

I'm using a mini jack to two RCAs cable to connect the PVR to my TV. You can get a cable like that pretty much anywhere that sells home AV cables.

I ordered one (took about a week to get here from Malaysia). Then depending on the pin-out, you might need to move the wires around in the connector to match it up (use an exacto knife or some other really thin blade to slip under the plastic tab and pry up just enough to release the wires).

'course, after I got it all mounted onto a blank expansion slot bracket, I noticed the MSI SPDIF header sitting in the motherboard box... :o

I bought my adapter at Radio Shack... I think it was like $3. That would get you up and running cheaply until Asus gets them back in stock at least.

You know we all expect pics right? Build up and completion.

Alright, my saga continues... First, thanks for all the sound ideas. I will buy an adapter from radio shack for now. I like Torque's idea but I am not sure it will work. The pinout in the book shows pins with: 5v, ground, and spdif out.
Does anyone have an asus spdif. I would like to know if it is just a connector or if it has other components on it. The 5v worries me.

My next problem is the CPU cooler. I totally forgot about it when I budgeted and bought the MB and chip. The last one I built was a kit with the chip and cooler. So I looked on newegg and found a nice quiet (and semi reasonable one) from artic cooling. The zalmans looked expensive and I went for the cheaper one. Now I just got it and it is HUGE. The fan is on the side, not the top and it stands 5 1/8" tall. The antec case says it is only 5.5" tall. Can one of you with the NSK 2400 case let me know about how high it is from the MB to the top of the case? Now I think I have to return this one and get something else. Any suggestions on a lower profile, quiet and semi cheap cooler? I don't need total silence, but I don't want and airplane either.

This is getting crazy. The last PC I built was with an athlon 2000+ and this cooler is 5 times larger than that one.

I found this http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Coole.../a4022.asp one on zipzoomfly for $20 and free shipping. I would have bought it first if I would have seen it. It looks like it will work. It has to cool an Athlon 64 X2 3600+ with an AM2 socket. I am not planning on overclocking so does this look like it will work?

I have an Athlon64 3000+ (less heat generated than your proposed CPU) and i have a Zalman CNPS7000B-CU Super Flower Cooler and i haven't seen the temp get up to 40C. That's with a fanmate attached to it and turned to the slowest speed. I can't hear it unless i remove the case and put my ear a few inches about it!

It keeps my 939 3200+ between 35-40*C all the time, I keep it at about 25% on the fanmate as my case is in a enclosed area.

Someone correctly me if I'm wrong. The 5V on the SPDIF isn't used unless you're using an optical SPDIF... the 5V is used to power the light, IIRC. So you'll only use the ground and SPDIF out pins... atleast that's the way mine is configured and it works just fine outputting the signal to the digital input on my receiver.

I'm using the retail HSF that came with my 3700+. Using MSI's setting in the bios to slow down the fan if below a certain temp, it runs dead silent with the chassis cover on. I would think that Thermaltake fan would do just fine for you. I have an Asus board for my main computer upstairs with a dual-core Opteron running at 2.6ghz and I'm able to use Qfan to keep the CPU cooler's fan at about 1200rpm,temp stays below 35C at idle.

Go with the Zalman, you'll be happy you spent the little extra. Some of the best quality coolers I have used to date.
