I am hard of hearing and I use closed captions on my TV. When I record using my PVR I dont get closed captions. I have tried every thing. If I am watching a show live it has CC but if I record the same show it does not. Does anybody know how to fix this?

I'm very interested in this, too.

Only some cards will embedded CC info in the MPEG files it produces. For a long time this was only the Hauppauge PVR250 and PVR350 cards, but more recently they added this feature to the newest PVR150/500 drivers. I've not heard anything about this feature being present in other devices (like HVR1600 etc).

I have an HVR-1600. Any idea where I should look for the setting?

I dont think there is any setting for it as such, rather that it just does it automatically if the device supports it. For example, if you're using newer drivers with a PVR150 and you do a recording with GB-PVR, then it'll automatically end up with the CC info in the MPEG2 stream produced by the card. I'm not sure if the HVR1600 is capable of this or not - it took several years of people requesting this for it to be added to the PVR150 drivers.

In this quote you state that with the new drivers with the 500 the CC info is embedded in the MPEG files. I have 2 500 cards. How do you get the CC to work (assuming I have the newest drivers). Thanks

I've never done it myself since I dont live in a country that uses the US CC standard, so cant give you exact details, but there is a post here somewhere here where a few poeple confirm a new version of the PVR150 drivers enabled this feature.

It didnt require anything extra to be done for recording, but these CCs will only be shown in GB-PVR during playback of an existing recordings, and only if you're using the Intervideo decoder + VMR9, and you must have the option enabled in the misc tab of the config app.

Also since the file has the closed captions embedded in it, you could use a tool to generate the srt files with the captions and then use the internal srt viewer. That gives the advantage of being able to toggle then on and off. I haven't personnally done this, but when I get some time to convert my system to the new drivers I plan on it. On the forum there is info about mpg2srt which is the extraction tool.

The problem with srt from shows that have roll-up CC is that it shows one letter at a time and is annoying. Even the mpegs from ReplayTV have this problem, due to the company that does the captioning. The good news is Merrypig is working on a fix - read from post #88 and on - http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showthre...675&page=6

I don't believe they can be toggled on the fly. Can they?
