Hi Sub,
Was wondering if you could add the ability to have GBPVR look at shortcuts as if they were an mpg file. What would be nice is to shutdown the recording service, move files to another drive, create shortcuts in the recordings directory to the files on the other drive, then start the service back up (or reload the xml dump instead of stopping/starting the service). The shortcuts have the same name as the files, though they are obviously shortcuts and GBPVR will not allow that.

What would it take to do that? I think it would be REALLY a neat feature and enable us folks with several drives to keep all of our recordings in the "RECORDINGS" menu. I think that with USB enclosures and drives becoming so cheap that a lot of users will start using them and this feature will go great with that. That also provides a solution to the age-old question people have always asked here about having more than one "recordings" directory. The "video library" is ok but as you know it doesn't keep all the metadata which is a bummer.

Thanks in advance, I hope you will consider this!

Actually what I have been thinking would be nice is if we could specify multiple paths for recorded programs. I have two 160 GB drives (was putting together out of spare parts) and the one drive has my O/S but the rest of the space is basically useless. Any thoughts sub ?

I do intend to one day allow the user to specify multiple recording paths in the config app, and a maximum space usage for each, but I wont be making that change just yet (or the one described above), since it forces some significant changes to the client PC functionality.

You should really look at VideoArchive. It solves as far as I can se exactly what you are trying to accomplish, but even easier than you are requesting.

Prior to merging some of my drives to a large RAID5 volume, I had past 1,5TB of recordings on drives C: thru H: .

This has worked like a charm for me for over two years. Simply move the excess files from the recoding disk to identical directories on the additional disks, and configure VideoArchive for these directories.

Then every recording you move transparently be visible irrespectively of which disk the recording is located on.

Try it Smile

Being able to create symbolic links that span volume, driver and even shares is one of the really nice new enhancements that I've found in Vista.

I'm not big into plugins as they seem to have a funny way of not working properly after a new release, so I won't be playing with video archive.

It will be a good long while before I make the Vista jump. I've been burnt by W2K and XP both by upgrading in the first 6 months after their release. Don't come to me for sympathy when we find out in 6 months that all of your data was available to anyone in the world Smile

Sub is this something you could do (either allow multiple directories or respect shortcuts) for those who need this and aren't interested in the pc client? It could be a selectable option in the config app so people that use pc client could choose to not activate it. I'm close to filling up my drive and would really like to keep these files in "recordings".

Thanks

You might want to look into "dynamic linked drives" (something like that)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309044/en-us
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

I've stayed away from dynamic disks. It's reported that disk i/o slows down by as much as 30% using them.

Hi ram4x4nut.

Know where you're coming from.

I've kicked all but VA looong time ago due to bad experiences and weird problems.

However - thru all of this, I have managed to keep running VA with no problems so far through many upgrades (2½ years of upgrading almost every time within hours/days after release).

So maybe you should try it anyway - worst scenario being that you after some future upgrade will have to wait a bit for a VA-upgrade which at that time leaves you where U are now. In the mean time you will enjoy(I'm sure) the VA benefits just fine Wink

As I said above, I do intend to do something like this, but I'm not going to cut corners to try and quickly get some up and running for those that dont use clients. I'd rather do it correctly in one go, and solve it completely rather than have to do the change twice. It wont be in the next release though.
