I think you are right but I'm still a little confused when a DVD has multiple language subtitles I don't think that is carried the same way as the CC data.
Here is a link to the file format for closed captions in the stream like the ones the PVR150 has.

I think I found the answer to my question. Subtitles are embeded video streams that are overlayed.
Closed Captions are embeded commands with timestamps and text data.

I tend to think this is it. I thought the conversion was to a true subtitle format. I will have to check with Hauppauge to see if their hardware supports this because I could change the demux to feed it.

They're both valid subtitle formats, both in fairly wide use, but DVD subtitles are based on pictures, while the CC format (which can also be carried via DVD (for decoding by TV rather than DVD player)) is in the decoded line 21 CC format. Tons of other formats exist also (DVB subtitles, line21 teletext subtitles etc)

One thing that is nicer about using the line21 decoder versus mpg2srt is that the subtitles lose their position info with mpg2srt and only show up in one place. They move around based on who's speaking with the line21 decoder.

OK, I got CC work on the MVP using the mpg2srt. But the CC is off my about 8 seconds from what the actor is saying. IF I watch the same show on my computer the CC is PERFECT. Anybody know how to fix this?

I don't know if this will effect it or not, but there is a subtitle delay in the config file. <SubtitleDelay>100</SubtitleDelay>
You might adjust that and see what it does.

That setting will affect the delay for your computer display. The configuration you want to change is:

<SubtitleDelayMVP>1000</SubtitleDelayMVP>

The value of 1000 works for me.

So how do subtitles work on the MVP? The SRT viewer doesn't make sense to me since the subtitles are added (I believe) as an overlay on the decoded data. Since encoded mpeg data is sent to the MVP, are the subtitles re-encoded into the mpg data via ffmpeg, or does the MVP decode the subtitles directly in the mpeg stream?
