mcpaul Wrote:Nice job, soccerdad. By chance I ran across this thread looking for some info on a GB-PVR issue. I had just recently purchased the ASUS M2NPV-VM and I'm in the process of finding compatible memory. I'm finding the ASUS qualified vendor list too limiting (expensive), given that I'm looking to put 2 x 1 GB sticks on the board. The manual states the motherboard does not support memory modules made up of 128mb chips or double sided x16 memory modules and I'm finding the results return by some memory configurators (e.g. Crucial's) return results that would appear to be inconsistent with this - in other words they use 128mb chips. Now, if I understand correctly you're using 2 x 512mb to get to 1 GB. Not quite what I wanted to do, but I just may have to readjust in the interest of getting something I know will work. Could you post the exact part number of the memory you are using?
ASUS is not a very good source when it comes to pick the correct set of RAM. If you go with any well known brand of today you will be on the safe side.
To understand the the limitation of 128 mb you must know that each memory module consist of several memory chips on one piece of PCB (Dual in-line memory module or DIMM) and that is part of this limitation that ASUS make a reference to. All AMD CPU do have a memory controller integrated and the latest socket AM2 will not have the same problem that the very first Athlon64 for socket 754 had at that time.
As far as you get all your memory at the same time and in pair if you want to use dual channel (which only means that memory use 128 bit instead of 64 bit to communicate with memory controller), you should be safe.
I can see that you have already bought a pair of memory modules from Corsair and I would think that those TWINX are better then Value Select (which I use myself). Just be aware that you can not exchange memory module after you have open the package and installed them and then regret that those have less bandwidth then PC6400 which is the highest recommended for AMDs CPU.
