MediaMVP and Pre-recorded Video's

Sorry I am new to this so I hope someone can help me out. I have been running GBPVR for some time now and like the software alot. Recently I have purchased a MediaMVP and hooked it to my network. To my suprise after turning it on and starting the Server things worked right off the bat! (or so I thought) When I choose to watch either live tv or channel guide and select a station I can watch LiveTV with no problem. But when I choose to either the music library or video library I am presented with a listing of all the directories / files I have setup how ever when I select either a movie / video or music file the screen goes blank and nothing begins to play. If I start the GBPVR front end on my pc and do the same action the video or music begins to play with out a problem. Has anyone ever run into this issue or any one have any recommendations on how to solve it? I originally thought that possibly there was a problem with one of my directory configurations seeing as some are setup to use a network share and others are setup to use a local storage device but choosing a file from either location still gives me the black screen end result. I know its not a lockup on the MVP or the PC's fault because I can hit the back button on the remote and I go right back to the menu.

Oh and another thing, I am running WindowsXP on a dual core AMD system. The MediaMVP is hardwired down to a switch.

What type of file are you trying to play? .mpg, .avi, .dvr-ms, or something else?

All files I have tried to play are either Divx for video (using the divx converter to convert them) or MP3 (for music).

The MVP can only play MPEG1, MPEG2 or MP3 files natively, so when you try to play other file types it has to try to dynamically transcode back to a format that is supported natively. There are a few requirements for this to succeed.

Your machine needs to be relatively grunt. Given you mention dual-core above, your machine is probably fine on this front.

The file also needs to be a type that is convertable. Divx video in a .avi container file should work. Divx files in a .divx or other container file will not work.

Thats odd about the video files. The box I have says the MediaMVP will play MPEG1, MPEG2 and Divx right on the front? As far as the file formating I will have to check. I know I have renamed the files to .divx after there done just cause I like the pretty logo on the file explorer but I believe there just plain .avi files.

It only plays MPEG1 and MPEG2 natively, but the Hauppauge MVP software does similar on-the-fly transcoding of divx files (converting to MPEG2 for playback on the MVP).

Transcoding files comes with several limitation, so its better to stick to MPEG2 files if you're a regular MVP user.

HAU MediaMVP will play also MCE files dvr-ms but it doesn't FF/RR to well, I don't know about GBPVR if works any better.

MPEG1 will play on the HAU MediaMVP but all PVR-150s and up only record MPEG2. GBPVR will play KVCD (MPEG1), VCD as well SVCD okay I've done it for years. Audio Hz has to be 44100Hz not 48000Hz.

The audio I am trying to play is 44100Hz , 128kbs in stereo. Any Idea's on the audio?

Alright just for grins and giggles I have decided to not try and play anything that I have previously recorded and record a video (using the gbpvr recording settings) last night. I also have set to run comskip post recording and inbetween 1am - 6am to convert the recordings to XviD. My results are quarky. After recording comskip ran and things worked fine. I could watch the video on the MediaMVP no problem (this was expected). But this morning after even GBPVR converted the video when I tried to play the converted XviD video on the MediaMVP the first time it appeared the server crashed. The screen went blank as it has before and then it appeared the MediaMVP rebooted. It came up to the blue screen that said "loading application" and then back to the GBPVR screen. How ever if I tried to play it a second time it began to play. (Atleast for the few minutes I watched it the show seemed fine).

So whats going on here? Does anyone have a reliable means of video compression that can be used to stream video content to the MediaMVP other than MPEG1 or MPEG2? If so what compression are you using and what methods are you using to compress the video? (tools, process, etc?)

To be honest, if you intend to use an MVP, you're better off just leaving the files as MPEG2.
