What's more important:
  • Number of music formats? MP3, WMA, OGG, M4A
  • MP3 Album art but less formats (MP3 WMA only)

my vote is for support of more audio formats especially if mvallend can add the support required at the mvp end

Cant understand why you would embed art in a file as you just end up storing the image many times

All my music is in MP3 format so the 2nd option would suit me, but forsaking alternative formats for the sake auto album art (which can so easily be done already with folder.jpg and a program like Album Art Aggregator seems the wrong way to go.

I know, but I've had calls for it from a number of users so I wanted to put it to the test....

The native audio support in mvpmc is for mp3, FLAC, wav, and ogg. I think FLAC support is good because it is lossless but I'm biased because a lot of my collection is in FLAC format. There is two ways to do this
- modify the protocol and add new audio types or
- just trigger off the filenames.

Other audio formats would happen when I move to other platforms.

Edit: Of course with the wave support any server side transcoding will work.

I think the requirement comes about because apparently apple store the image inside the file on the ipod therefore lots of people have album art embedded in the track and dont realise you can simply create a folder.jpg file

I like to be able to use album art embedded within the file. I have a few directories that are compliations of personal favorites, one hit wonders, oldies, etc. When i store muisc in these directories the folder option doesn't really do as well since each tract would have a different album art, as opposed to tracts being stored in a directory, by album, where the folder option works just fine.

Isn't being able to see embedded album art or folder.jpg part of the ID3V2 tag standard? Most music players i've tried seem to look for embedded, if not found, folder.jpg or if neither are found a default jpg file or no file found message.

I think you can have a file called "song title".jpg for these sort of folders but yes in this case the embedded option is probably better

The few times I have attempted to handle Album Art in a program, I tend to take a fall through approach
1- look for embedded
2- look for the screwed up way WMP handles it (if I can)(I use WMP a lot, so it often will work)
3- folder.jpg
4- default image
Why would this stop you from supporting other formats?

Its more the libraries I use (want to use) for reading tags. One has support for a large number of formats, but I can't make it accept the APIC tag, and other one has the album art, but is MP3 specific.
