Mmm, interesting thread this one.
I read it as I am planning out what to do about a media server tucked away upstairs with MediaMVP and / or PC / Laptop client access round the house.
I think I'd like to keep things simple, reliable without too many evil Smile transcoding headaches. So may be BIG hard disk, .mpg recordings and MediaMVP is the way to go.
The alternative might be a cheap quiet PC's instead of MediaMVP as clients.
Begs the question, what other alternatives to MediaMVP are there that can deal with Divx.
Adrian.

This is exactly what I do and have not had any problems, it works really well. Record in mpeg2 with comskip catching the adverts, then cut out the adverts and convert to 200mb xVID avi files overnight (which I sometimes put on my portable media player, which I can archive to DVDs more easily and which are easier to view accross the network and such).

Playing on my MVP couldn't be easier, thanks to ffmpeg. Simply select a file, ffmpeg starts transcoding, and even on my ancient computer, works fine, with the video starting a few seconds later. Pretty seamless, and ffmpeg uses surprisingly little CPU usage so I can keep using the computer as it happens (with the exception of playing CPU intensive 3D games). Even fast forward/rewind/skip works perfectly.

It's not quite as convenient as using mpeg2 directly, but I think it works really well and I'm quite pleased with it, and it allows me to have a massive archive of television programs at my disposal.

Mmm, OK sounds good. I will have a go myself at this approach over the next couple of weeks. Cheers!
