I know there are a lot of threads on stuttering already, but none quite seem to describe the problem I'm having. It's actually 2 related problems in fact:

The first is only noticable on fast moving scenes (I hadn't noticed it until I was watching the wimbledon final yesterday!) but materialises both on livetv preview and timeshifting. Its barely noticeable, but bad enough that compared to watching the TV directly I can tell its there.

The other problem seems to appear at random, with really bad interlacing/stuttering. Oddly, it disappears if I pause and resume playback.

All other avi files etc playback just fine with no stuttering or interlacing problems at all - its only livetv/recordings that show it up.

Anyone got any bright ideas on either of these? For reference I'm using encoder pass-through, recording to dvr-ms files. Purevideo is handling the decoding.

Are you running PVRX2.exe?

I have experianced similiar behavior since upgrading & I am also using Purevideo.

Try running in window mode & see if the purevideo icon appears in the taskbar when playing mpeg2.

It doesn't anymore for me & I think that is the problem.

I had the exact same problem (VERY slight stuttering when viewing recorded stuff with the PVRX2) and I checked for the nvidia decoder icon and true, I did not see it ... meaning, I guess, that purevideo was not being used. I went to config, changed video decoder from "Nvidia decoder" to "System default" and restarted PVRX2. Now purevideo is being used (the icon appears and I can config the decoder when video is playing, just like it should be).

...BUT...

there is still some slight stuttering. However, I think it doesn't have anything to do with the decoder, because if there's a stutter when playing back a recording and I rewind, the (very minimal) stutter repeats in the exact same place in the video. So even if the first poster does not have purevideo, I guess our problem is exactly the same, and probably the fix is same, too.

Could the reason for the stuttering be that there's something wrong with the recording process? Bug in the encoder? CPU spikes when recording was made?

Changing the "De-interlace control" in purevideo from "Smart" to "Automatic" removed the "stutter points" from my recordings. Unfortunately this helps only nvidia users...

I dont know exactly what it's rules are, but the nvidia decoder doesnt show its tray icon when its explicitly used, only when its picked up as the 'system default'. You can confirm it was being used (even if no nvidia tray icon present) by looking at the filter list in PVRX2.exe-native.log.

If you're using XP and VMR9 then there's a MS patch for that.

Thanks, applied that patch and it seems to have done the trick.

Re the "slight stutter" problem, I am using purevideo and have tried changing about the options - smart vs automatic etc. Doesn't seem to make much difference.

Have you tried the -fse cmdline option.

I've found that my video card (Nvidia 6800) is sensitive to other activity on my PC if I don't use the -fse option. For instance, Rivatuner polling the vid cards temp sensor would produce a slight stutter.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm already running it with the -fse switch on though!
