Choppy video + changing channels

A couple of things with the new release:

- I get really choppy video response. Under the old version, the video and audio were smooth. AMD Athlon 1800+, GEForce 128MB, 1 GB RAM
- I can seem to change the channels using the numbers on they keyboard. The only way I can get the channels to change is pgup and pgdown

Any ideas?

If you set the video renderer to 'VMR9 Custom' in the config app, does GBPVR.exe still run smooth?

I'm not really familiar with videocard. It might not be up to it.

Might also be worth trying to run 'PVRX2.exe -fse' to see if it helps.

The Video Renderer setting was already set to 'VMR9 Custom'. Whether I run PVRX2 or GBPVR the video performance is the same. Both demonstrate a very choppy video. It's like it gets stuck every 1 - 2 seconds.

To be more specific about the video card, it is a card made by MSI. It's an NVIDIA GeForece 3 Ti200 card (175Mhz) with 128 MB DDR (400Mhz) 350 Mhz RAMDAC.

Regarding the channel changing, the issue had to do with the fact that I manually configured the channels. I had been trying for 3-4 days to get the EPG to update from Zap2It, but finally gave up and manually configured them. I went back and deleted the channels and tried automatically adding the channels via the EPG update, and finally got a connection to Zap2It. Once the EPG updated, the channel changing issue went away.

The choppy video is still present. Any other setting besides the VMR9 Custom that you can think of changing? Just seems strange that it was fine under the old version, then when I upgraded to the new version, even the old version (gbpvr.exe) is choppy now.

The usual advise is to make sure you're running on the primary monitor, and try other video decoders.

I'm not really familiar with the capabilities of that video card, but its possible its not up to the task.

I have a similar issue. After changing channels the video/audio becomes choppy. The only way I've found to work around it is by minimizing the PVRX2 app and reopening it. I have a a 8800 GTS 640mb video card so I doubt it's a lack of power.

I just upgraded and am now running into the same problem. I left it set to VMR7 in the config as that is what worked best in .99.12. If I pause/ff/rw a recording, sometimes it'll be choppy. If I leave it playing choppy for a while, Task Manager reports CPU usage starts going up from the usual 8-14% till it maxes out at 99%.

If i pause/unpause once or twice it'll become smooth again. This is while using PVRX2.

If I try gbpvr.exe, playback is smooth and no issues but then an amplified CPU loading issue. Gradually climbs from 8-14% up to 99% about every 20 seconds then drops suddenly back to 8-14%.

VMR 9 is choppy all the time.

What decoder are you using?

Well I got it to play much smoother. I played around with different video decoders that I have. The decoder that I was using when I was getting the choppy and fluttery video was Cyberlink Video / SP Decoder. I tried changing to Nero Video Decoder, but there was no difference in the video. Then I tried changing to InterVideo NonCSS Video Decoder for Hauppauge. That did the trick. It's now much smoother. Maybe it's because that's the decoder that intended for the Hauppauge PVR-150 card that I have.

I generally use Live Preview mode, but I tried turning it off to go to time shift mode to see if there was any difference. There wasn't. In time shift mode, the video was choppy for me with the Cyberlink Video decoder.

Next question. I noticed that the CPU utilization is about 15 - 17% higher than when I use the WinTV2000 application that came with the card. Any idea why if both PVRX2 and WinTV2000 are using the same video decoder that there would be a 15 - 17 % difference in CPU performance? Is there that much more overhead in the application?

Finally, what happened to the pause, rewind, ff, etc in the OSD display when in time shift mode in PVRX2?

Probably the difference in video renderer. The Overlay renderer which is pretty easy on the CPU usage.

It may not be using acceleration features of your video card by default or something similar though.

There is no OSD buttons at this stage. They'll return in the next release.
