Use a different image for main menu background

Is there a way of doing this with the new skin2 system?

No, this isnt possible. In the past plugins returned a picture of the entire screen, including the background. Now they just return a list of things that sit on top of the background. Animations like fade-through/zoom-through rely on the single fixed background, and only operate on the pictures that sit on top of the background.

i might be missing the point but
i changed the background on mine you have to change both the background and the overlay picture
