Hello All

i've been having some issues with GBPVR lately and the logs dont help much. i finally had some more time to troubleshoot and the cause is one of my tuners that's sometimes losing signal while recording. when signal is lost the recording stops (and may restart creating a second file with -2 appended). however the green tray icon stays on even hours later after the recording should have finished. this causes the second tuner to also destory its current recording (if any second recording running at that time). no recordings are attempted after the signal is dropped.
the only way to fix it is to manually restart the service. the logs do not have anything between the signal dropout failure and the service restart not even a locked=0 that others got. they simply end (from my tests i think they end right when it lost signal.)

i've also tried the command

gbpvrcli.exe /inprogress 1 /mes "{Status}\n{Title}\n{DescriptionNoWrap}\n\n"

which should display the in-progress recording and indeed it's displaying the name of the "broken" recording after the recording should have finished.

any ideas how i could fix this? i've already made all scripts to help me out with power management but this thing is driving me crazy!

Thanks!

What mux are you using? Some ATSC users have found that recordings stop mid way through if they use anything other than the Microsoft DVR-MS mux.

i'm using the ATI mpeg mux. however i can say that the twinhan 3250 card just sucks... signal drops off sometimes even when watching live (even with other apps not just gbpvr). i'm using same antenna as for the hvr 950 (which works well.)

i removed the card from gbpvr and let my USB 950 do its job and everything worked well... but i cant record 2 shows at the same time anymore.

the point is that live tv recovers but when this happens during recording (and its not very often - maybe a couple of times each half hour) it will make the recording service hang and never finish recording. i dont mind a few dropouts during a recording... but if i dont get a recording at all or just the part before the dropout then it sucks. what's worse is that it also kills the second recording with the second tuner (if any at that time) and all the following recordings too.

i even disabled slimm gbpvr so that it does not mess up the scripts i use to restart the tuners before each recording block. due to slimm pvr and my restart script i once got 2 recording services running Big Grin

any ideas how the service could be reset or at least made so that it recovers and moves on to the next recording in a timely manner? if one recording gets corrupted at least it shouldnt hang and do nothing else until i restart it. its as if it goes into an infinite loop and it can only be fixed by a restart.

I'm actually seeing something similar with My DVB-T recordings. I thought it was related to recordings with special characters (æøå) but it has just not been consistent and with no real pattern other that it happening mostly during daytime.

Basically, the recording never stops from the service point of view, but there is nothing actually being recorded either. And as you say - restarting the recording service is necessary to get things going again.

Nothing at all shows up in any logs, so it has been pretty difficult to pinpoint the issue good enough to post a bug here - but i see I'm not alone.

I actually went and reinstalled my PVR machine completely in trying to resolve this. I have also been through different MUXes. Still the issue persists.

I do seem to remember that I didn't have any of these problems while running with the Microsoft DVR-MS mux, but being in an MVP-environment it's not a place I want to be...

Issue has been observed in versions 0.9.12 and 1.08.

So I would also like some kind of resolution to this.

i'm pretty sure now that signal loss equals service hangs in recording mode forever until manual restart -- in most cases but not in all cases -- at least on my system. i actually reproduced it without problems by unplugging the antenna.

too bad there's no logs but i'm assuming when the service hangs it goes into a loop and either never dumps the buffer to the log file or there's no buffer to dump at all.

i'm still investigating and will provide more info if i find anything...

all in all i'm happy with GBPVR and i'm not really a huge TV watcher so its no tragedy if i dont get a recording -- it just sucks that the PC stays on if the service hangs (and my scripts wont work) i'd rather have a jumpy recording than a PC sucking 400Watts of power each hour!

Is the GBPVRRecordingService.exe process still running at that stage if you check the task list, or does it die?

it is running in the task manager when it hangs. actually once i had 2 running which was puzzling. i assumed it was caused by slimm pvr which tends to restart the service -- i was still experimenting with my devcon scripts...

recordings now are just jumpy whenever signal drops but continue and stop on time. no more dropped stuff or 0kb files. Smile
