Is it a good idea to run an MVP off a switch?

Hi all
Have just got a second MVP for the upstairs telly but have no wired slots left on my router. Two solutions:
1. Buy a wireless router and connect some of my computers to the network wirelessly so that there's a free slot for the wired MVP, or:
2. Buy a switch to connect to the router and give me more wired slots available.
Is one of these solutions better than the other or is there a third way?
Any help gratefully received.

Pretty cheap to buy a switch. Unless you buy an 802.11n router and clients, the network performance will be significantly slower between pcs with wireless. Typically a 54Mbs connection will hit around 30Mbs.

I run a wired switch from my router with an mvp, xbox, and webcam hanging off it with no problems.

It's a cheaper way to go and I'd pick one up from somewhere with a godd return policy to try.

Failing that, get a cheap (compatible) router and flash dd-wrt to it; that's what I use upstairs wirelessly and it works a treat.

I run a wire downstairs from "the shack" main router and it goes to a switch with a pair of MVP's and a couple of PC's hung off it. Works fine.

I would like to recommend a switch that a friend of mine have and he claims his problems with his MVP's has dropped: HP Procurve 1800-G.

It is a managed GBit switch, he has put the MVP ports on 100 half duplex and run everything else at GBit speed. Works very well and is not too expensive. As soon as I have persuaded my wife that it is a good idea I will buy one aswell...

Note for the mvpmc dongle, this would not be a recommended setting, mvpmc runs best at full duplex. Almost any switch should work well with it and a managed switch is unnecessary

The Hauppauge dongle loads at full duplex after a power on but then restarts at half-duplex which is way some switches have trouble if their auto-sense doesn't work properly.

Thanks for all the replies - I picked up an 8 port switch from Maplin this afternoon (figured spare capacity would be helpful!) and now have two tellies that have MVPs.
