Hi.

Juniors cartoons is simply eating up too much space in my setup (I'm at fault myself - I seem to always go for getting the full series of whatever I can Rolleyes ), so I'm seriously considering transcoding them to a more manageable size. However - I'm reluctant to leave the comfort of the mpg-format.

Anyone got recommendations as to what filetype at what conversion settings (and using which tools/apps) to get a reasonable compression while still maintaining comparable quality (which for cartoons should be easy)?

It should be with a reasonable performance in transcoding - i.e. it must be possible to get the cartoon up playing almost instantly and with no hickups/stuttering.

Experiences and/or suggestions greatly appreciated Smile

My setup - see sig.

Honestly, I'd just find a way to leave them as .mpg files it you want to use them on your MVP. (ie, add a hard drive or similiar)

Well - I've added plenty already (see sig - got 9 disks humming in that machine alone) Rolleyes not to mention depots of recordings on other machines here as well.

I guess I was hoping there was some way out, but I have stayed with mpg so far, so I guess I will still have to stick with them, and then consider adding even more drives or alternatively  start erasing more agressively Sad

You could use ZProcess to transcode the original MPG into a MVP MPG. Depending on your parameters, like bitrate and dimenesions, you can end up with file size much smaller than the original.

Cartoons, don't look bad at all, when they've been downsized...

Thanks - I'll look at it tomorrow (getting towards 2 AM here)

Cartoons are indeed a grateful subject for compression if anything is, so I'm looking forward to see what is possible. I'll post back here with my findings.
