i may be wrong but i think you will find if you choose the microsoft mpeg 1 decoder you will be actually using the system default in my case it uses nvidia pure video and i see you have that installed so im guessing that is what you will be using
have look down by your clock and see if the nvidia pure video icon pops up when playing back a mpeg

for some reason when you actually choose nvidia pure video as your decoder it doesnt actually work as well as if you choose system default or microsoft mpeg1
without changing or adding some setting and cant find the post to do that its somewhere in the forums (im not talkimng about the registry fix there was some other setting)
proabably different on your system but thats how mine works
thats my 5 cents anyway

I'll check that tonight. If it is using the Purevideo decoder, why is my CPU usage so high (40%) ?

It is a real decoder. See attached.

It comes with Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate. It may also come with some other Microsoft products.

Its definitely a real one. If the purevideo icon is popping up for you, then this means for some reason the video was unable to connect to that decoder so directshow selected to use another decoder instead. If you look at the logs you'll see both listed in your filter list (with the microsoft one being unused).

ah, I'll have to give the Microsoft Decoder a try! I got a new rig with Vista Home Premium, which unfortunately meant I had to use a newer version of nVidia drivers... can't use my trusty 94.24 anymore... i've got 163.75 now, and picture quality is bad... blurry, fuzzy, and dull. Sad

sub, can you give some advice about Direct3D settings? Should we set it up for high quality with those antialiasing settings and all of that jazz, or what do you suggest?

You'll need to add the "Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Decoder" decoder name to the <SupportedDecoders> setting in config.xml to use this decoder.

If there is something I've learnt during this project, its that everyone setup is different and there is no one set of settings that look great for everyone... just use whatever looks best to you on your setup.
