From reading the forums, it seems obvious that an EPG is essential for using GBPVR as a PVR. Since I'm finding the setup of GBPVR to be such a humbling experience, I thought I might try things a step at a time. With that said, can I set up live TV through GBPVR without an EPG or is this a requirement even if I'm not trying to record anything?

Unitl you have an EPG you won't have any channels setup, so you won't be able to select a channel to watch.

You can use the application without listings, including live tv, but it'll be a lot less enjoyable, and many of the features wont be usable. You'll need to setup you capture source with the epg source set to 'none', then manually add all you channels using the 'Add' button.

It'd be a lot less work to pay CT TV Listings or Schedules Direct the few dollars to get a real EPG.

CT TV Listings even has 4 days of free listings. (click the ad at the top).

Other EPG options (some free) are listed at http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manual/EPG . Yapi2xml is also free but could disappear at Yahoo's choosing if they wanted to. It will get 14 days of listings.

Thanks for the quick replys! I subscribed to CT TV listings and updated my EPG (I did't download the patch to allow for four days of listings, since I'm doing this step by step and I figured one day would get me started). When I attempt to open the TV guide, it shows a blank screen. When I try to view live tv, nothing is displayed. My setup is capture device #1 Hauppauge HVR-1600 (analog), USA, source: internal tuner, tuning: antenna, direct recording plugin, epg: CT TV listings, Changer: no changer required. Device #1 Hauppauge HVR-1600 (atsc), Type: atsc, all countries, manual tung, bda recording plugin, epg: CT TV listings, channel changer: none. I guess it goes without saying I'm using an HVR-1600. My video card is a evga e-ge force 8500 gt. Vista home basic. AMD Athlon 3500+ with 2gb of ram. Dial up internet access (I live in the middle of nowhere). Probably a lot of irrelevant details in there, but I figured too much was better than not enough. Do I need to download the patch even if I'm satisfied with a one day program guide or is there something else I'm missing? Thanks for your help.

Hit the 'update epg' button in the capture source settings then zip and attach your config.exe.log.

Sinec you're having problems getting things working, its probably worth deleting the ATSC capture source so you have a simplier setup. After doing this, confirm you analog capture source has your channels listed? If it does, after starting the app do you see your channels listed? If not, it could be Vista's file protection getting in the way - try deleting the c:\users\<account name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\devnz directory, then try again...

Thanks for the suggestions. That helped the program progress a little further, but I still can't watch tv. When I click on live tv, it shows channel 3 and the time on a black screen, then after a few seconds it shifts back to the main menu screen. I don't know if the epg is the culprit because the tv guide shows the appropriate channels, but in the row associated with each channel it shows "no show details" for each available time (and I just got done updating the epg). Before deleting the folder you suggested, it wouldn't show anythng under live tv or the tv guide, so things are progressing in the right direction. Thanks for all your help!

Did you try deleting c:\users\<account name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\devnz?

Either way, reproduce the problem then zip and attach the logs?
