Which plugins, where to go from here?

OK, my basic install is up and running well and now I can see some of the things I'd like to work a little differently. I'm left a little confused by the various plugin options etc. a few pointers to send me on my way might help. So suggestions please for couple of things i'd like to do

1. I'd like to automatically transcode the MPEG files to Xvid (can happen overnight)

2. I'd like to be able to automatically/batch rename files with more descriptive titles (say episode name or whatever if this can be culled from the EPG say) - as other programs will access the recorded files.

I'm in the UK, receiving Freeview.
