So if I can play these without stuttering, then I should be okay with the HDHR?
I don't think those are right, they are from Dish Network (satellite). Here are some samples for off-the-air ATSC broadcasts:

I don't know if they're big enough to tell you much (a few seconds apiece I guess) but it's a start. HDHR also supports digital cable--I dunno if you are interested & I don't know anything about these, but they are different bitrates than OTA DTV.

What is the latest "best way" to integrate a HD HomeRun into GBPVR? Is this thread using an External recorder still the best way or is the BDA route better?

Also, any help on playing the resulting recording on a MediaMVP?

Thanks,

Everyone is using the built in BDA recording source.

The MVP can only play standard definition video, so you need to be careful to only try playing standard def recordings.

One problem is that the MVP can not play AC3 audio, which is the standard at least for QAM cable channels in the U.S. I can watch my SD shows that HDHR records via my MVP, but I can't hear the audio. If anyone could fix that, it would greatly extend the life of my MVP. Otherwise, I will have to upgrade shortly.

Using the BDA drivers I notice in the Config program there are several BDA Mux options.

DVR-MS is the default choice but if I want to transcode the HDHR-recorded show for display via the MediaMVP what would be my best choice for MUX and what post-processing would I have to apply to the HD recording?

First off, you should use the TS Mux option to save recordings as original transport streams. From there I'm not sure how you'd want to get to the Std Def MVP but an easy path to DVD is HDTV2DVD 0.41.

TS files will be automatically transcoded for use on the MVP, your just have to set up the ffmpeg parameters you want in config.xml. It can even handle AC3 transcoding. However sub has pointed out that there limitations on using the TS mux if you want to use PVRX2 on your PC.

If you use the DVR-MS mux forget the MVP, but the Cyberlink mux does work ok for SD digital. The problem as JimF says is the AC3 output. The mvpmc dongles does play this but usually the audio will be out of sync. Again, this doesn't address HD.

What device are you thinking of upgrading to?

The Popcorn Hour "Networked Media Tank" is the only way to go at the moment. But they have a newer version of the chip coming out next Spring that adds support for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def audio formats, at least for pass-through to an external decoder, so I think I will wait until then.

IMHO, the next gen. audio isn't really a concern for the HDHR or digital TV recording. It's taken this long to get to AC3 5.1 and I bet it will be years and years before another audio format is added.

Also by passthrough they PCM mean HDMI 1.3 passthrough but how many of you have HDMI 1.3 devices that actually include the necessary audio decoders? Probably not many. Its sort of like buying an old cassette, VCR and even DVD player that was Dolby Ready, DD ready or DTS ready. Big deal you still needed an (expensive) external decoder. I've got a PCH and as long as the digital audio output can handle the bitrate of the passthrough it isn't a huge difference.
