On my old 4/3 (1280x1024) TFT I get black borders all around the picture when viewing pilarboxed HD transmissions, see picture below. Toggling F7 does not show a mode where the picture is "zoomed" to fit, is there a way to do this?

The broadcaster is transmitting this video as 16:9, ie left/right bars added to the picture prior to transmission. To show a 16:9 video at the correct aspect ratio on your 4:3 screen, GB-PVR adds the black bars to the top/bottom. This problem wouldnt occur if the broadcaster just transmitted this 4:3 video as 4:3.

If you using one of the VMR9 renderers then you can can press F7 until you get the 'center cut' aspect ratio mode. You cant do anything about it with EVR or Overlay.

I tried F7 before, look at the screenshot what "Center cut" does. It stretches in the vertical direction and cuts away a little from the horizontal direction.

Edit: I use "VMR9 custom".

I think you've got something else funky happening with your video decoder, trying to retains the aspect ratio by itself or something similar.

I tried Intervideo and ATI and both results were the same. I looked at config.xml and I made an "educated guess" about how you scale the picture within the <AspectRatioModes> section.

To scale a 16/9 transmission to 4/3 you need to cut away the black bars left and right (2/16th on each side) and keep everything in the vertical direction.

I thought this should look like this:

Code:
<AspectRatioMode name="Center Cut2" ratio="-0.125,0,1.125,1" />

Seems to work, see below. (It needs to cut a little more to be perfect.)

Good Job.

Great Smile Worked for me too. Just add that line to the config.xml file near the line "AspectRatioModes shape="4x3" and you're done!
