I was just wondering if there was a way like a plugin or something that will save the recordings in a smaller file size, as i have been doing a lot of recording and my computer was telling me i was low on disk space, i didnt know why till i looked at the file size of a recording, its what 1.5gb for a file that is 38 mins long, and that doesnt seem quite right seeing as i have full DVD's ripped that are 2 hours long that only takeup 800k ish. Is there any possible way for me to do this?? i have tried lookingall over the place and cannot seem to find something

Thanks

Andy

You're using a DVB-T card, so the bit rate (and ultimately the file size) is decided by the broadcaster prior to transmission. GB-PVR has no say in this.

You can however looking into converting the recordings to xvid or something similar post-recording.

I have thought of converting them, but would there be a program that is out there that converts it after the recordeing or while the recording is going on?? what about that experimental conversion thingy in GB-PVR that is says use at your own perill does that work??

Search the forum using keywords such as "transcode" "convert" "xvid".

Also see this wiki page for how gbpvr can be setup to transcode (shrink) your recordings.

btw: a full dvd rip would be about 4.3GB. An 800MB (not k!) rip sounds like a dvd that has been converted to xvid or such like.

Compresing video files takes a lot of cpu power and you really need a good Pentium 4/c2d or fast AMD64 cpu.

Aslo, a htpc needs lots of disk space! I have 650Gb and others here have much more than that.

[edit] no you can't convert recordings in progress and I think the "experimental" conversion works fine (I have not heard any complaints anyway). Othwise you can add some kind of conversion command to your postprocessing.bat file if you have some experience with making bat files.

Thats cool, i tried the built in experimental bit in GBPVR and it works a treat, and yeah i have a pretty powerfull machine, and 600GB storage (2x 300) so im cool, i just wasnt happy with recordings taking up 4.6GB for 30 mins of video, but thanks :-)
