Poor qaulity analogue viewing

I have been trying to get my video playback quality to match my tv tuner with no luck. I have a pvr 150 and Hvr 1600 with allendale 4500 and x1650 512 mb video card with 1 gig ram and connect to the tv with svideo. I had thought my fuzzy, blocky playback was a result of my cards not having as good a tuner as my tv until i tried using VLC. I get great picture quality with VLC so I started experimenting. I get good picture quality with overlay in GB-PVR but the same poor picture when using VMR 9 or EVR in GB-PVR and PVRX2. I've tried numerous video codecs and the picture doesn't really change . Is there something I'm doing wrong? I can record with PVRX2 and the picture is poor with analogue capture when played back in PVRX2 but much better played back with VLC. I have no problem with playback of digital and HD shows and captures. I use DVR-MS for these and they look great.

Does this only effect analogue Live TV and recordings, how do avi's and other formats look?
Which mpeg-2 decoder have you selected in the config app?
If you playback an analogue recording in WMP how does it look?
Have you got FFDShow install on your system and is post processing active in the config app?

Maybe some of the other more experienced members of the forum could advise you on how to use GraphEdit to see exactly what is decoding what.

Analogue live tv and recordings are the problem, recorded or live digital is good.
I'm presently using the ATI Mpeg decoder , but I've tried all I have including nvidia with pretty much the same results. I've not tried watching a recording with WMP just VLC. I don't have FFDshow installed, I had problems with it a couple years ago so I've stayed away since.

in catalyst turn down all the 3d stuff to 'application controlled' [=none] and see if that doesn't help a bit..it affects video quality alot on SD..
i'm afraid the video softness may be just the way d3d works..so much filtering going on in d3d...wish we could turn it all off..

i just got a new HD2600 and it doesn't look as good as my x1550! half the deinterlacing doesn't work and there is so much post processing going on that it looks almost cartoonish..

x1550 is same core as 1600, just less mem/cpu speed...

plus the component[RGB] out doesnt work on either HD2400 or 2600!
man, they have lots of work to do on the new card drivers!!

Thats quite strange really, because I would have thought that they're both using the same mpeg-2 decoder. Thats why I suggested GraphEdit, just in case for some freak reason the mpgs were using a different decoder than the dvr-ms files. The fact that they look okay in VLC suggests it's not a signal quality/bitrate issue (just in case check the default recording bitrate in the config app). I suggested WMP because as far as I know Gbpvr and WMP handle video in a similar way by simple calling the relevant filter. Where as VLC is self contained and uses it's own filters, great for showing you you've got a problem but not what it might be .

This to me suggests a graphics card / decoder problem, the GC isn't doing or the decoder isn't telling it to do hardware processing.

Are we talking fullscreen youtube video crap or just not as good as your TV? I personally have a similar setup. I've got a hybrid analogue/digital set up with a HD2600xt connected to a CRT via svideo. If you're also connecting to a CRT then personally I get the best results by:

Setting the screen resolution to 720*480 / 720*576 (depending on whether your in NTSC or PAL land), also try and match your TV's refresh rate.
Set the s-video sharpness to more.
Set the flicker removal to zero.

Did you find a solution? video looks blurred in PVRX2 and slightly hazed but when views in VLC or Media Player Classic the videos are sharp and Rich with color and blacks...

is this an overlay problem since PVRX2 does not support this?

Is there a way I can get this good picture quality in PVRX2?

I am blown away by the video quality in other players and I am Stunned and cannot figure out how to get that quality in PVRX2.

I downloaded American Idol 720p version and it looks like standard tv in PVRX2 but in media player classic the picture was breathtaking with clear hair strands and blacks.

I wish I never played it in media player....

inPVRX@ the video looks slightly hazed and sortof clear....

using Cyberlink decoder and Mvp and not sure what to do...

Sub? any idea how I can re-create this?

I was playing around with my Catalyst settings last night. I found that when I set the s-video sharpness to more, it made the text more difficult to read. And when I set the screen resolution to 720*480 (NTSC), the picture overscanned and the picture was cut-off on all sides.

I played with decoders and everything, and I'm currently using the NVIDIA Purevideo. I was using MPV, but the picture just didn't seem that crisp. It's frustrating as I spent a good 3 hours playing around with Catalyst and Purevideo to try to get a good picture. Hopefully I have one now.

When is sub going to put that magic "make everything work correctly" checkbox into GBPVR

This is my first post here, but I have been reading for a few weeks (still a newb). I am having this same problem and can't figure it out. I have 1.2.9 installed and my SD from the wintv 150 looks very blurry when viewing live tv. My system is a Celeron D 3.46 with 2GB Ram, 500GB sata 2, winxp pro SP2, 8500 GT graphics card, wintv 150 and a wintv 1800 (on the way). I am having trouble getting my LCD TV (full 1080p capable) to accept the HDMI to DVI video, so as of right now it is connected using VGA cable at a 13ss x something resolution.
I did notice that CPU goes to about 20% load while watching live TV. Is it my GC that is causing the problems (hardware not doing the decoding)? If so, what do I need to do to get it working correctly?

I believe (at least by default) VLC uses overlay.. so if you can't get a good picture using VMR9 or EVR, then you can use Overlay (it's supported again in PVRX2). At least for nVidia card users, you can freely tweak video settings and D3D settings from the control panel and get true deep blacks, for instance, or whatever else you are after. You can also clamp down all the D3D stuff if that's what you're after.

I know not everyone has the CPU for it, but the very best quality I have gotten is using ffdshow as my MPEG2 decoder (enabling libmpeg2 in ffdshow for MPEG2) and using the Yadif deinterlacing filter through Avisynth. Honestly, I've found that Yadif does a better job than the hardware deinterlacing of my 7600GT. I also used the warped resize in ffdshow while I was at it.
