I know I have read here that if you are using evr on XP you will not get dxva. You have to be using Vista to get hardware acceleration when using EVR.

gazoo Wrote:I kept AVIVO with a 1080i file and tried the various modes and this is what I got (this is both cpus averaged together):

Overlay 12%
VMR9 Custom: wouldn't work right, kept stopping every 5 seconds
EVR: 43%
VMR9 FSE: I had alot trouble because you can't see the task bar, but it was peering through blinking in out a little and it seemed to be around 38%

Some of this weird behaviour I attribute to the new motherboard with the early drivers (like the avivo problem in vmr9 custom). however, I really want to know how I can get 12% on a 1080i video. What is overlay mode and why is it THAT much better? Is this the only mode that's actually taking advantage of acceleration?

The 12% in Overlay isn't all that surprising... my machine only uses 25% doing 1080i in Overlay and that's with an AMD 2500 and ATI x1600 Pro. Overlay is much less resource intensive and if everything is just right, you can get some really low CPU usage.

It's the other numbers that are shocking. The chipset and CPU should be capable of much better, and like you said, hopefully it's just related to new drivers and what-not.

By the way, if you want to test your CPU usage in FSE mode, just fire up TaskMgr or PerfMon before starting gbpvr, give the Guide a few moments to load (since this tends to peg the CPU for a bit), and then run your tests. After you exit gbpvr you should be able to see your performance graphs.

Here's that dxvachecker app's output on my file:

See that entry in red on pdvd. That goes away once I stop using the avivo once and use the cyberlink one. Of course after that, avivo doesn't work again until I reboot.

Very odd. Also note that my file is 704x480. I know I recorded this off of our NBC affiliate over QAM. They are supposed to be doing 1080i so I thought 1080i was 1920x1080 interlaced so I'm not sure what's up with the resolution. It also does not seem to match the 720x480 recommendation up at the top of the pic. It's gotta be doing high def - the file size is insane.

Mine with AVIVO is about 43% total with both CPUs, or about 90% on 1 core. That's while using the play option on VMR9 on avivo using this tool.

By the way, what do all these modes mean? Also, is GBPVR able to hit these modes?

Don't mean to revive this thread again, but I was curious if more people have tried out the 780g chipset boards and what is their experience with hardware acceleration.

Mine only works reliably using avivo in EVR. But it's probably not hardware accelerating:

dark_half Wrote:I know I have read here that if you are using evr on XP you will not get dxva. You have to be using Vista to get hardware acceleration when using EVR.

It seems when I use avivo in any of the VMR's, it just stutters and won't work. I actually think that I've never had ANY hardware acceleration on this board. If I did, I believe it to have been only in SD videos.

Cyberlink works fine too, but it doesn't seem to accelerate my 1080i videos either. I'm using avivo because it utilizes slight less CPU than cyberlink.

I too am a little disappointed in this board. As with most ATI GPUs, it's more than likely a stupid driver issue. I've looked around on the "internets" a bit, and only found some discussion on avs about this board but hardly anything about the acceleration. At the pace these boards keep selling out on Newegg, I'm curious why more people have not voiced their concerns about this issue. They probably don't care since the CPU covers it and they don't notice it or they are buying this as a lower end gaming board.

The only reason I'm not all that concerned is that it does manage to play everything I throw at it, albeit taxing the CPU a bit. I'm also quite happy that it's an integrated graphics set so I can use some smaller cases and save some bucks on the video card as well.

I also have not found ANY codec that can hardware accelerate for h.264. I used coreAVC and it only does software, but the cpu can handle it (1080p video running at around 75% of BOTH cores if I recall correctly).

try using the media player classic home cinema mpc-hc decoder
http://tibrium.neuf.fr/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/
you will want to download the individual directshow filter
The current version is supposed to work with ati video cards and i have seen reports of people who have 780g systems who say it works.
The current stable version doesn't work with nvidia card's.
newer nightly build of the full media player classic home cinema program with the decoders built in do work with nvidia cards they don't seem to build nightly the directshow filters by them self
I am thinking about downloading the source and trying to compile my self but that might be over my head Smile
Also you will need to add the decoder to the list of supported decoders in the config file

does this replace wmp11? Does it work with GBPVR?

Could I still play DRM stuff like netflix watch now plugin?

Thanks for the links..

No MPC-HC is a standalone program, the program has the decoders built in to it. So it will not affect your window media player at all.

Also the individual decoders, and media splitters are available for download, This is what you will want to download for use in gbpvr.

You just have to put them some where (like the windows directory) and then register them on the system using regsvr32 from the command line.
Like i said before you have to add the decoder name to the gbpvr config.xml in the h264 supported decoder list, I dont remember what its name is and I am away form the dvr for the weekend.
Since you can install the individual decoders it works the same as any directshow filter such as divx, it just that there is no installer and you have to get down and dirty to install it Smile
Hope this helps, if any one want to chime in and help explain this better please do as I kinda suck at explaining things

gazoo,
Do you mind if I jump in here. I have built a simliar computer. At least we have the same motherboard. I have the M3A78-EMH HDMI an APEVIA X-QPACK2-NW-BK/500 case AMD Athlon Am2 6000 4 gigs ballistix ram western digital raptor 150, Hauppage 1600 tv card and samsung dvd burner. I am getting the same high pitched whine. I called asus and they said to remove all the components and then add them back in one at a time. They mentioned a capacitor going bad. I pulled a sound blaster audigy 2zs platinum sound card out and the whine is quieter. I thought it was a hard drive going bad and I replaced that. It seems like the more activity the more the whine. I am beginning to think it might be the power supply. Do you have an apevia case? Have you learned anything more about the whine. I disabled the lan in the bios and didn't lose the whine.
