I'm trying to set up one pc to act as a client with gbpvr but since setting it to do that whenever I try to start pvrx2 I get a big white screen with a red x through it. I don't know what that is. I've noticed it before however on this PC when trying to check system information through gbpvr.

Also, all I saw in the wiki description was to share the tv folder and add that PCs name to the Server box in the config that I am sharing from. Is there not anything else I need to do to enable access to that on the PC that is actually serving tv.

Thats normally a skin error. On your client do you have the correct skin installed?

When I get the big white screen with the red X I know that the server is offline/asleep. I always take it that the client and server can't communicate.

Firewall setup on the server is a common problem when first setting up a client as well.

I think that may be it. I know that I got the message when I first rebooted with a ton of tuners showing not working. How do I resolve it though? As far as I know all the proper folders are being shared is there something else I need to set up on the server end?

Yes, the other symptom of not being able to talk to the database is a full list of blank tuners. Exit and restart the trayicon thing in config to refresh things if tweaking.

I'll check my setup here......

Server.
gbpvr program directory ?:\program files\devnz\gbpvr shared as "gbpvr". Currently "everyone" has full access read and write.

Recordings directory ?:\gbpvr shared as "gbpvrdata" and likewise everyone had read/write access.

The above permissions are probably too open, but at least work.

Firewall. I'd turn it off while you test and get the rest working, then turn it back on to see if it stops it working and open the ports. I'm using Kerio 2.1.5 and just grant full i/o to gbpvr recording service, gpbvr.exe, pvrx2.exe

Client.
Just on the capture sources tab. Tick box "configure this machine to act as a client". Using "streaming" (works best for me). Server servername. Database share \\server\gbpvr

Looking at that, you probably don't need to have a share on the server of the recordings directory. I did because I was swapping between streaming and filesharing.

ok so I did have this set up wrong. I wasn't sharing the
program files/devnz/gbpvr directory.

I did that and it got rid of the endless string of tuners on boot up. But now if I go into PVRX2 and hit live tv it doesn't do anything it just sits there for a few seconds like it's trying to do something and then right back to the menu. I'm sure I have something set up wrong on my end.

I've just got a couple questions to try and figure this out here.

1. Database share should be the above mentioned directory. Correct?
2. When set to streaming the recordings share and tv buffer share are grayed out. Should that be that way?
3. The recordings share should be the folder that my server is saving recorded tv shows to. Correct?
4. TV buffer share would be the folder in that folder marked "card 1". Is that correct?

1. yes
2. yes
3./4. in File Sharing mode, these should refer to the same folders which you have specified on the Directories tab in the config app on your server. In streaming mode, I don't think they matter.

What you probably need to do now, is look at the Config app Playback tab settings on the client. Remember that you likely won't have the same codecs on the client as on your server, so you can't just make everything the same as the server. Sometimes you have to play about a bit.

One step at a time rather than leap into live tv Wink

Can you play existing recordings?

Also what mux are you using - with the streaming method, (I can't remember the details) some mux/file formats aren't happy. I use cyberlink with normal mpg files and streaming works.

Also with streaming, the recordings & buffer folders aren't needed and are blanked out on mine as the client gets the data sent to it rather than reading a file.

Yes, I've been sharing the folder my recordings go into in "my videos" for quite some time now and that works fine.

Sorry but I really have no idea. I tried googling mux but it has really not given me a great idea of what that is or how to check what I'm using. If you're refering to what mpg codec it should be using it's NVIDIAs Purevideo.

I also am going to include my log files just in case anyone wants to have a look at them and see if there's something I'm not seeing.

ok nevermind I got it working. I just had the wrong name in the server box. There are two names for each computer on the network the way it's set up one is a label that tells me where it is (bedroom pc) and one is the address or number assigned by windows to it. I had selected the label instead of the address that windows assigned to it. Thanks for the help guys. Sorry for the bonehead move there. It looks like it works great by the way.

I did have one other question though. When you're using this this way. With timeshifting and things like that when you're watching on the client pc is it using the hard drive on the client to buffer the recordings or the hard drive on the server?
