I'm far down the path of converting to Vista, went to install GBPVR and found the 1.2.13 survival guide says that the Hauppauge MVP dongle "unfortunately has issues with Vista". It then recommends mvpmc. My questions:

1. What are the "issues"? (E.g., I wonder if they might be not so severe that one might be willing to accept them.)

2. Has there been any progress/news from Hauppauge re resolving the "issues"? (I don't see newer software on their web site.)

3. How concerned about mvpmc should I be, especially as it relates to the Wife Acceptance Factor? (I can't tell as there are no GBPVR screen snapshots on the mvpmc web site.) I.e.,

3A: Will the screen look different running GBPVR on mvpmc than on the Hauppauge dongle?

3B: Are there any functions of GBPVR which would appear not to work or work differently using mvpmc versus the Hauppauge dongle?

THANK YOU ... Bob

(3) WAF should be better as more resilient and less crashes.
(3a) No, if auto start in emulation is setup.
(3b) not that I noticed.

It takes a little more effort to automate going into emulation mode, but worth the time.
If you don't set up auto-emulation, then there is one extra step when powering up the MVP - move to emulation on the menu and OK it.

MartinT123,
Thx for your info. Where can I find info about how to set up auto start-in-emulation?
FYI, resilience isn't really a factor. We have 3 MediaMVPs and have always used the dongle supplied with gbpvr and haven't had MVP crashes.

Anyone,
Any answers to the first 2 questions?

Thx ... Bob

I've never really been sure why sub chooses a reluctant tone regarding mvpmc, my suggestion would be to try it.

Its not a reluctant tone, but more I recognise that these users are having to do more work to get their MVP going on Vista.

The first few posts in this thread should be enough to do it. Basically it is a startup command line used by the emulation software that is a one-liner and contained in a shared directory on the server.

sub, as a wishlist item if GBPVR made a reply to a tftp request for dongle.bin.config like it does for the .ver file with

mvpmc --startup emulation --emulate ? &

It could be done with zero config.

Is it literally that single string? Does it need a return character at the end of the line?

That's it. You could replace the ? with the IP of the NIC the requests come in on for WOL purposes but it is that simple. The request comes after the mvpmc share check so it doesn't hurt anyone.
