A month ago I made a clean install of my machine. Left everything as much as possible on default settings. I did not install any codec packs. Below is a screendump of the DVD settings

If a user is having decoder problems, the first thing I always recommend is changing to something other than 'system default' (since the 'system default' decoder on your machine doesnt appear to be up to the job)

For Video Decoder system default is my only option. As all my existing recordings (mpg, avi) worked I did not see the need to install additional codecs. Apparantly I do need to do that now.

This is a pretty good sign you dont have the required decoders on your machine.

You might have an MPEG2 decoder somewhere on your machine, but if its name isnt explicitly listed, then its not a common one that is known to work with GB-PVR.

In the meantime I did install the Windows Essential Media Codec pack. I now do get it to display on the PC (which I never use for watching), but not yet on MVP(which I regularly use in the living room).
From other threads I do get the impression that only few have made that work, possibly only on the old GBPVR. I have not seen explicit mention of getting it display on MVP under PVRX2.

There is no DVD playback support for MVPs, including in the old version. The MVP only plays regular .mpg files. A few other file types like .avi/.mkv/.ts etc can play via on the fly transcoding, but this is not possible with DVDs.

Hi Sub,

I'm liking GBPVR more and more and can't wait to get my darn hard drive back from Seagate so I can get it up and running instead of beta testing on my old 40 gig hd!

After the bad flash drive problems I've been able to get the AVIs working flawlessly thanks again for your help and tolerance of the off topic thread (since it truly was not a GBPVR problem at all) while we trouble shot the problem!

I just tried playing a DVD though and the video plays fine but I get no audio.

DVDs do play in Vista Media Player and Media Center.

I checked the GBPVR config and the video decoder is system default with no other options and the audio decoder is also system default. I do have an mpeg audio decoder option but selecting it doesn't help. I also have several audio renderers available but none of them help either.

I assume this is a codec problem? (even though media player and media center seem to have the right codec?)

If so can you point me to a good codec to install? If not, could you venture a guess as to where to start troubleshooting?

Thanks sooooo much!

Steve

Most people install something like PowerDVD, and tell the app to use the Cyberlink audio and video decoders. PowerDVD often comes with DVD drives, so lots of people have a copy of it laying around. You can probably find and install free alternatives though.

Thanks Sub!

I have PowerDVD but when I went to install it on this Vista machine it said it had known compatibility issues so I didn't install it.

I'll root around for a Vista compatible player.

Take Care,

Steve

OK, I installed the trial version of PowerDVD (I'll be reloading within 30 days when the replacement hard drive arrives anyway) and DVDs play fine through it. I switched the video/audio codecs and renderers in GBPVR DVD Config to the Cyberlink products and tried again . . . still no audio from GBPVR's DVD player.

I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong, but would you mind taking a look at the logs for me and maybe give me a clue where to start?
