No ATI Hardware Accel, MPC decoder shows no video

Hey all,

I got a used PVR150 on ebay, and installed GBPVR a couple days ago. I've just been tweaking ever since.

I have never been able to get ATI Hardware Acceleration to work though. Here are my specs:

Athlon XP 2500+
ATI Radeon 9600xt
GBPVR 1.2.13
PVR150 (using s-video input)

I upgraded to the Catalyst 8.530 drivers, which solved a couple other issues, but not this one. I have "video mode" checked as well as the Windows Media PLayer Support, which is supposed to activate DXVA.

I downloaded the MPC decoder files listed on other threads in the forum, registered them with regsvr32, and changed the config.xml file.

When I use the MPC decoder, Live TV returns to the menu after a few seconds of black screen, or else remains black. I can't watch any recordings or other videos either, both give similar results.

I've tried the Cyberlink decoder also, and I get a fairly good picture (as long as I use VMR9 and not VMR9FSE) but my system runs at 100% CPU load. The Hardware Accel box IS checked in the Cyberlink options.

If I'm forgetting something, please let me know!

I've tried the Cyberlink decoder also, and I get a fairly good picture (as long as I use VMR9 and not VMR9FSE) but my system runs at 100% CPU load. The Hardware Accel box IS checked in the Cyberlink options.

On thing to be aware of is that the Cyberlink settings store its settings on a per app basis, so settings seen in Config.exe may not be the same as it uses in PVRX2.exe. To make sure its enabled you'd need to either do a forum search for info about the registry settings to manually setup hardware acceleration in PVRX2.exe with the Cyberlink decoder, or search the registry for the Cyberlink Config.exe settings and rename them for the PVRX2.exe executable instead.

The 2400 and up support H.264 hardware acceleration. They've had MPEG2 hardware acceleration for quite a while, and I'm fairly sure the 9600 supports this.

Just deleted the message while you were posting. Wish I had realized that before I bought the 2400. I had a 9600 that I dumped to get hardware acc for MPEG2 (which is really all I use). Rats, something else I bought without the proper research! Like the $3000 HDTV that droped to $1500 the next year!! Grrr

I'm fairly sure the 9600 only had support for SD MPEG2 acceleration, which is fine for the original poster's PVR150 captures. If you've got HD capture hardware, you'd probably have needed something more than a 9600.

Okay, I applied the registry patch found in this thread:

But I'm still getting a constant 100% cpu load while running gbpvr. In config.exe I have H.264 set to system default, as that's the only option it gives me.

I found out that currently MPC doesn't support my card, which is probably why that wasn't working.

Is there anything else I should try?

Nope, DVD's and PVRX2 from the svideo in on my capture card. Of course, since I got my 2400 I just HAD to start playing with x264 encoded videos. Oh well. Another thought, though. The original HTPC was a Athlon XP 2000 with the 9600 and ffdshow. That worked fine for CPU usage till I started post processing in ffdshow. Decoding of DVD's was about 30 or 40 % as I remember. A 2500 should handle it. Could memory effect things?

Maybe try the Overlay renderer.

Even without hardware acceleration I'm surprised you CPU usage is that high for playback of standard def files. I'd expect more like 30-40%.

I'm using VNC to control my media PC, which may account for some of the cpu load, but not a whole lot I wouldn't think.

One thing that I found odd is that when I change something in config.exe, after pressing okay it takes about 90 seconds to save my changes... I sort of thought it was a quirk of the program, but could something be wrong that's making the cpu load so high?
