Just hooked up my HD-PVR yesterday, on my Vista x64 HTPC (specs in sig). I got it so that I could stream video from my PS3 and maybe record later on.

Right from the start things didn't look promising.

Connecting my PS3 to the composite input produced a video stream in Arcsoft Capture Module for about 2 minutes, then it went blank. Turning off the HD-PVR and powering it up again brought back video for about the same time period.

Component input did not produce any video, the resolution entry displays the same resolution from the composite input - 720x576. The device options also don't change when component is selected...

I thought maybe GBPVR could give me better results but no luck.
I think it could be because I don't understand how to set it up for streaming video from the PS3. How do TV channels factor in when the connected device is not a reciever?

The Hauppauge HD-PVR is detected by GBPVR in the config, but selecting a channel yields no result.

Doesn't the Arcsoft software come with an H.264 codec? 32 bit codecs work in Vista x64 as long as the app accessing them is 32 bit.

What am I missing?

**UPDATE**

I was able to see that capturing from the component input was working by using the very helpful graphedit guide from ARogan's Blog:

Quote:Filter Graphs:
capture:
hauppauge hd pvr crossbar -> hauppauge hd pvr capture device (proppage: color settings) -> Hauppauge hd pvr encoder (proppage:encoder settings) -> file dump (filename)

playback:
.ts file (video)-> cyberlink h.264/avc decoder (pdvd7.x) -> video renderer
(audio)-> ffdshow audio decoder -> default direct sound device

preview:
hauppauge hd pvr crossbar -> hauppauge hd pvr capture device (proppage: color settings) -> Hauppauge hd pvr encoder (proppage:encoder settings) ->
arcsoft mpeg demux (couldn't get it to work with any other demultiplexer)
create two pins: video (mpeg-2 video) and audio (mpeg-2 audio)
pid mapping: video 0x1011, audio 0x1100 both elementary stream
(video) -> arcsoft video decoder -> video renderer
(audio) -> arcsoft audio decoder -> default directsound device

diagram

the only thing left is the lag. There's maybe a 0.5 second lag between remote control commands/audio and video, doubtless from the hardware encoding going on. Any way to keep the encoding on the CPU?

Its normal to have some lag. You wont be able to remove this.

(GBPVR now works!)
The lag in GBPVR however is horrendous, 3 seconds or more in live tv.

There's no way to reduce the lag? Watching anything would be impossible otherwise...

If you enable live preview mode then you'll get minimal lag (0.5 second or so).

These sorts of devices arent designed for trying to play game consoles though, where reaction time and responsiveness is important. They're designed for recording tv programs, where it makes no difference if there was a short delay.

yeah but... this should be up to the user, whether they want hardware encoding or not... oh well.

Its not a GB-PVR problem though. It sounds like you want something that the hardware you've bought doesnt do.

(BTW, There isnt the bandwidth on USB2 to not hardware encode the highdef component signal)

what I don't understand is, when the sound and video are not in sync with this lag, how come you guys are fine with it? At least where live TV viewing is concerned.

Haven't seen this topic discussed much, so I'm guessing htpc users are just okay with it. I would have expected tons of threads and complaints sent to capture card manufacturers (??)

yeah... I was wondering why Hauppauge didn't go for firewire :/

Its because we're talking about two different things. I'm talking about a slight delay between the input signal and what you see/hear on the screen. It sounds like you're talking about a delay between the audio and video.

This A/V sync problem you describe probably relates to the decoders you're using.
