QAM comskip

I just got a 1600, and got it working so far. Multi record is very nice all my locals are on the same channel :o. What comskip is everybody using for QAM? comskip79_121 and comskip79_144 are worse than analog with bad snow seems to be early on cuts.

I'm not sure what to make of COMSKIP and QAM? I'm using a 2250. I'm searching for an .ini file that even comes close to working right. Analog cable is the same story. I tried the .ini files at:

Large portions of the show are marked as commercials and vice versa. I think I'm running 79_143.

comskip tunning seams like so much work, I'm thinking about just giving up comskip as desirable as it seems especially for my kids.

I use comskip 79_141 on QAM cable. I'm constantly amazed at how well it works. (The wife is also amazed) I've also tried it on DVB-S digital and analog cable without problems. The ini file I use is the default, other than some minor settings to turn on verbose=10 and keep the log. I like to look at what it did (curiosity mostly, as it never seems to need much tuning).

The only problems I've seen are:

1) During sports events where they come back from a commercial for a single play, e.g., In American football, after a touchdown, they show commercials, then briefly return for the kickoff (less than 1 minute of programming, then go back to commercials, and it sometimes misses the return and marks it as a commercial.

2) Occasional commercial missed in the middle of other commercials.

Both of these are pretty easy to spot. The first case has a commercial that looks abnormally long. The second has two with a short non-commercial in the middle. I may try tuning at some point, but I've been extremely happy so far.

The possibility that someone might not use comskip when they have both the hardware and smarts to use it, is something that I am sure makes the angels weep and the devil smile

I agree!

Comskip has been awesome, easy to set up, integrated nicely with GBPVR, and nearly 100%. I get same issue, missing some kickoffs. Some channels (CBS) have started putting their logo onscreen during commercials for upcoming programming, which Comskip can pick up as the intended show. Has not bothered me enough to try to tune yet.

I believe for any donations you can get later versions too.

I'll make some config file changes according to that post and see what I can catch. I normally run verbose=10 and keep the log and a .txt file. The txt file seems the same as the .edl, but I think it's frame number oriented, not time.

I should emphasize that the two problems mentioned don't bother me and they are very rare - I can spot them pretty easily in the displayed edl timeline (one has a commercial break that's too long and the other has two commercials that are too close together). I've gotten to the point where I can often spot a touchdown in the recording based on the timing/length of commercials detected.

Because I was interested, I looked at the logs for #2 and found that the commercial that was missed had an aspect ratio similar to the program, but different from the surrounding commercials. The block detection for the commercial in #2 was correct. I didn't get around to looking at the logs for #1 - where it missed a quick return for one play.
