Sorry guys..

GB-PVR doesn't do all it's work on it's own. When you want to transcode, it calls a transcoder. By default GB-PVR uses ffmpeg. It's a commandline tool, and the settings for the commandlines, (and their variations) are stored in the config.xml

This thread started with ideas on tweaking the commandline to get transcoding with ffmpeg working correctly

By Default GB-PVR 'calls' ffmpeg to do it's work...

When ZProcess is used, GB-PVR calls ZProcess, which does some things and then calls either ffmpeg, mencoder (an alternate transcoder), or VLC, (another alternate transcoder) to do it's work.

It's a go between, that dots some 'i's and crosses some 't's....

Anyway, while working on this, I discovered that ffmpeg doesn't work on a variety of TS file types, and I think that that is the problem that you have all had.

I have had better success with MEncoder and the best success with VLC. You could actually mosify the command line in the config.xml to use MEncoder or VLC, without using the go-between ZProcess. But that's a different story...

I understand that many people have not bitten into ZProcess, because they don't understand how it works or why they might want it. It has been my endeavour to make it as seamless and automated, so that you don't need to know (But I'm always happy to explain)

Sunken Wrote:In fact when manually transcoding the option for MPG isn't even available. What is the reason for the non availability of MPG.

There isn't a listing for transcode into MPG by default. Some people manually add that. In this case though you may have trouble, because ffmpeg in general is having trouble with some types of TS files...

I'm not trying to steal the show here, but I've made ZProcess add a listing for Transcode to MPG.

It's still needs a modification before I can release it to handle TS files though...

Do I need a new command line to auto transcode sd TS to Mpg?

First of all, certainly manually transcoding and auto transcoding have been behaving differently for you all. But really it's the same thing, and I'm sure we'll get this worked out.

As I said, I'm pretty sure that the commandline is getting messed by things like double sets of quotes, or the absence of quotes, files with spaces (which can cause trouble too... etc.

The answer to your question is, it's quite possible that you would need two different commandlines, to handle SD and HD content.

I'm working on ZProcess to auto switch the two types...

PS... You have to understand that TS to MPG has not been a priority (for others) because it is preferable to use a mux that will record directly into mpg without the need to transcode...

Oh I think so. But I haven't got the latest version ready for release that will do TS files...

I'm testing a bit more still and I'll be ready for some brave souls...

Is your app written in vb? if so, is the source code available to look at?

I'm a VB programmer myself...Vb3 to vb.net, and would be interested to see how this stuff works...

Perhaps someone else has an idea to fix the ffmpeg command lines that are used natively for manual and automatic transcode.

But I know that I'm looking at it from a different perspective. I will be able to offer ZProcess to do these functions soon...

Frank, any thoughts on why my auto-transcode started just fine but rebooted the system about 1/3 into the transcode (details posted earlier)?

Could this have anything to do with the crash/reboot I mentioned above? I noticed our local broadcaster keeps switching resolutions - lower resolution during commercials and higher (1080i) during the show.

True - but TS mux offers much more - such as the multi-record feature that I can use with my HVR 1600 to record multiple channels at the same time.

The built-in auto-transcode capability of GB-PVR seems to be so close yet so far away. Smile
