topperdude: If you pc is crashing when converting video's, your problem is not the conversion process but rather a driver, hardware or heat problem. The windows XP architecture makes it more or less impossible for an application to simply crash windows.
Try leaving the lid off the computer to see if that helps (with heat). If it only crashes whilst also recording, your PSU may be too weak.
I see you are running an old XP chip, I got rid of mine a few months ago. They were a great chip in their time but were always terrible for converting video compared to intel.
I could only get 12fps with encoding with my mobile xp @ 2.1Ghz using mencoder.
