topperdude: If you pc is crashing when converting video's, your problem is not the conversion process but rather a driver, hardware or heat problem. The windows XP architecture makes it more or less impossible for an application to simply crash windows.

Try leaving the lid off the computer to see if that helps (with heat). If it only crashes whilst also recording, your PSU may be too weak.

I see you are running an old XP chip, I got rid of mine a few months ago. They were a great chip in their time but were always terrible for converting video compared to intel.
I could only get 12fps with encoding with my mobile xp @ 2.1Ghz using mencoder.

If you need more space, but some more disks!

Hmmm...care to elaborate on the weak PSU part? I think you might be onto something because I also noticed the voltage reported by Speedfan next to the 12V rail seemed low. Dont remember exactly what the reported voltage was but I can attach a screenshot later and I am curious as how you came to conclusion that the PSU may be the weak link because it DOES only crash during recording (manual transcodes complete just fine).

Re. the processor, I plan to use this as a server only with PCH handling LiveTV client duties and XBMC handling non-live/transcoded client duties. Although transcoding can start while recording, I'm fine if it runs overnite to complete. I understand per a response from sub to my question in a different thread that the system should be powerful enough tfor these duties (server and non-real time transcoding). But will need to focus on the PSU/reboot related issues to make it more stable.

Well, my "logic" is that if it works ok when you run it manually but not when running automatically, either it is a heat issue as you have just been recording and heat has built up.

You are still recording at the point of encoding and as the tuner also uses up juice, then (if the PSU is marginal), that might just tip it over the edge into undervolting.

IIRC, they used to say that +- 5% was ok on the voltages so that would mean 12V +/- .6V should be ok.

Maybe compare the voltages when encoding and also when encoding AND recording.

yep, should be fine for recording purposes and will obviously be able to transcode at whatever speed it can manage.

Perhaps try running a CPU stress application such as prime95 (in torture mode) but be warned the cpu can get very hot)

I have a athlon xp 2100+ for my server, 1GB RAM. Large Hard drives.

I have no problem recording the TS and transcoding. I can even do it on the fly, which means I'm getting more than 30 fps per second. Difficult to know because I'm using VLC to transcode.

I will be packaging up my test version that will use VLC as the engine soon. I have not been so successful with MEncoder or FFmpeg. But as for mkv files also, apparently ffmepg is still the way to go, so it won't be far behind...

Just to be clear, You will need to install MEncoder and VLC. I will be giving versions that I have tested compatible, in the release notes.

I am new to configuring digital in GBPVR but am trying to autoconvert as well. I did notice the same line Elmo mentioned in the logs concerning starting the transcode. My log file indicated one minute later completing the convert, but I didn't find any resulting file. (I'm not up on the differences between "ts" and "dvr-ms" files, etc. so not really sure what I'm doing.)

ACTLY what I'm trying to accomplish. Could you please describe the configuration required to do this? In TS mode my MVP crashes when trying to play the file. In DVR-MS mode the MVP opens the file, but doesn't play anything.

I thought I'd read that the MVP couldn't play the TS files due to lack of AC3 audio support or something. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

Are you trying to watch live TV on the MVP or playing from files (recordings), also are you using the stock Hauppauge dongle or the MVPMC version?

I dont know alot about AC3, but I guess that it depends on your provider whats in the stream, what broadcaster? country?

To answer Elmo, I have been trying to play to MVP from file, but I did just now try live TV and it crashed the MVP and produced an error in the execution of trans2MVP.exe (log enclosed).
