I've downloaded and installed GB, put can't figure out how to set it up and use it, and I've been using computers for 30 years! Nothing about GB seems to be intuitive.

Where might I find a thorough step by step instructions on setting GB up, and most importantly how to get the EPG to work?

Step by step instructions can be difficult as it can be different depending where in the world you live and what kind of source you have (satilite, cable, stb etc).

If you don't mind, I'd love to pick your brain. As one of the writers/rewriters/editors of the manual parts of the wiki:

Did you not know of the wiki? If not, where did you look? (maybe we can place the links in better places)

If you got to the wiki, what was your experience trying to find help for beginners?

What is un-intuitive about GB-PVR and how would you expect the setup and configuration to be?

As mentioned in other threads, many of us 'veterans' take for granted a lot of the simple basic stuff, so it's always refreshing to get some constuctive criticism from a new user...

Since you are located in the US, you can signup an account for free 7 days from https://www.schedulesdirect.org to get EPG. Once you setup the capture and the EPG source, the channel will be populated according to the EPG information.

I can understand the overwhelming of the original setup for GBPVR for new user. I took me a while to understand what is EPG originally.

GB-PVR is free
It's written by one person.

The wiki is a novel. But slowly getting more organized so that a new user will find and use the basic information, and get up and running. It's not all that hard to get started. And there's always this forum to help when asked...

EPG cannot be any easier (read: it is slightly difficult) because of two factors: The international scope of the project, and the fact that it's free. Beyond and Sage both have access to EPG data because they pay for it. There's simply no money for something like this in GB-PVR. Some of us are already going out of pocket to support free projects...

Because the EPG needs to be setup manually, (arguably the very most important component to GB-PVR}, it will give most users added steps to configure.

But I doubt many of our resident Doctors employed any of their knowledge in order to set up their HTPC...

It's certainly not rocket science. Anyone thinking so deserves to be on another forum where they will treated with as much respect as you have shown.

Frank Z, I didn't mean to insult or criticize you. For a one man job, GB is amazing. I've coded just enough to know how hard it is. I meant what I said constructively. I think the setup could be simplified a lot. I wasn't disrespectful. There is a difference between constructive criticism and disrespect.

I'm frustrated. I need a PVR, and after having set up SageTV and Beyond TV, I had hoped GBPVR would be as easy - all in one place during the setup.

As to your last sarcastic remark, my IQ is in the 150 range. I have a degree in electronic engineering with a 4.0 average, and I've owned two successful businesses - one was a computer store. I've built and maintained hundreds of computers, winning contracts with government agencies, beating out the likes of Dell. And I have experience in main frames going all the way back to the late 1970s.

You accuse me of being disrespectful, and then turn around and are disrespectful of me. If criticism bothers you that much, you might want to consider doing something other than writing code and publishing it on the Internet for thousands to see.

My actions were reactions to yours. You did not come across as nice nor respectful. That's not me takling offence to being personally criticized. It is me being upset with the one or two of you that come on and say 'GB-PVR sucks' and then only vague references to what is wrong...

You also strike me as someone with experience being on other more argumentative forums: Stir the shit and keep it going. Well, seriously I won't be biting any further. It's truly a waste of time.

And don't even get me started on people who feel the need to quote their resumes... Anyone saying that they know what you say you know, shouldn't be bitching about anything....
