I'm sorry. Its hard to put into words. I couldn't even comprehend how to set up the EPG, for example.

Download Beyond TV or SageTV, and set them up. You'll see what I mean. All the settings are right there in the install, and its obvious and intuitive what to do.

I have tried sagetv sometime ago and although it might have changed, the epg was only easy to set up if you were living within the USA. Anywhere else involved jumping through hoops, to get epg especially if you had more than one card with different epg listings.
I agree with you gbpvr can be difficult to set up at first but it has gotten easier, especially for people like me who do not read manuals/wiki unless stuck. But to be fair with such a wide range of cards and setups out there this would never be easy. On another note generally once gbpvr is setup you do not have to touch it again

After I got everything set up, I love the program. Potential users need to have some moderate computer experience to set GBPVR up, but that is not your fault. I understand that you can't afford to foot the bill for the kind of EPG the big guys use.

Now that I understand your situation and how to set the program up, I think GBPVR is the best free program I've ever used. It is excellent, even for a program that would have to be purchased.

If you don't mind, I'd love to pick your brain. As one of the writers/rewriters/editors of the manual parts of the wiki:

Did you not know of the wiki? If not, where did you look? (maybe we can place the links in better places)

If you got to the wiki, what was your experience trying to find help for beginners?

What is un-intuitive about GB-PVR and how would you expect the setup and configuration to be?

As mentioned in other threads, many of us 'veterans' take for granted a lot of the simple basic stuff, so it's always refreshing to get some constuctive criticism from a new user...

Can I suggest (while it is still fresh in your mind) that you re-read this post from zehd & try to answer his questions? Also add anything else you can think of that would make the initial setup easier for new users so it can be added to the wiki?

Many computer users aren't familiar with writing even simple batch files. Perhaps there could be a setup included during the install to make that easier?

Alright then... So where did you look (and/or where didn't you look, but later found out you should have looked) to find out that the EPG should be set up first?

I think I've placed the information if the correct locations, but obviously not...

I'd be happy to straighten that out.

Also, as mentioned, the 'Capture Source' (analog and digital) really need to be worked on...

I have to agree with skycyclepilot that mapping the EPG especially for digital channels has a signficant learning curve and the online info isn't much help. I know in a post somewhere sub said it should take 15 minutes for the mapping, but (when I did have choice on clear QAM) the 40 marked channels all UNKNOWN (00/AC#) took me hours to figure out.

Once I found the Silicon Dust site I was able to map a lot faster because I didn't have to use two televisions. It isn't any better with other programs though. The fact there are transient channels for on demand programming don't help either.

The problems of getting a good digital signal to my HVR 1600 didn't help matter but you can't blame GBPVR for that.

I've just downloaded the software and needed info but after reading this thread, I'm not game to ask anything. It appears Frank Z is so fed up with idiots, he's now taking pot shots at anyone and everyone. For the record I found nothing to justify taking offense. As for the resume comment, how else do you seperate yourself from the inexperienced? I've used computers since mainframes in 1974, have a diploma in computer programming and at 52 years of age I cannot be bothered playing games with emotionally unstable people with no self control. You might consider getting off your soap box long enough to interact at the same level instead of looking at the world down your nose. Your exhibition has convinced me to delete the software and find an alternative. Well done, thank you and goodbye.
