I think you bought wrong.

Sub said 8500/8600. These are, unfortunately, the minimum you need to decode freeview via gfx hardware rather than cpu.

The guy in the shop has put you wrong to be honest.

Makes sense to listen to the forum and not the sales person.
I now have a gigabyte 9400gt and it's working slightly better but still lots of break up in the sound. The picture is almost perfect now.

The machine is 2 years old. What else could be causing problems?
vista home premium
msi p965 socket t motherboard
1mb ddr2 66mz ram
hauppauge nova-t-500 digital tuner
geforce 9400gt video card
Intel core 2 duo e6300 1.86Ghz cpu
Soundblaster audigy2 zs sound card

Thanks,
Phil

Is there some minimum hardware requirements for ram, cpu or soundcard so the sound won't cut in and out?
From the task manager i can see the cpu is working overtime.
Thanks,
Phil

Your machine specs look ok. I dont have the same video card or sound card though, so I have no way to know for sure.

Is there a check list or guide somewhere that helps you work thru problems like this?

I'm not really sure what steps you'd go through for this one.

In other countries you'd try other audio decoders and audio renderers, but the only decoder you can use with our HE-AAC format is the monogram decoder, which limits the options...

Could these symptoms be due to poor reception?

yes it could be reception.

What is the cpu like for playback? I think the 9400 might be a 8500gt equivalent. but not 100% sure.

cpu runs at abou 30% to 70% during playback after recording tv3 and 50% to 90% for tv2

it's a 9400gt (the numbers mean nothing to me)

hmm I have an 8500gt and it runs at about 10 - 20 % on all channels.

What video decoder did you end up with? check it's got the hardware decoding turned on.
