Burning videos to DVD

Hey all,
I'm confused as to why when I try to burn my 2.5gig mpeg file to a standard dvd-r, it shows the file as being 6.5gigs. I'm new to this pvr and dvd burning stuff so any help is appreciated. I read past posts and realize its probably being converted to a larger raw file before burning but is there any way to salvage my already recorded videos to put them on dvd?

This may be something to do with your sampling rate when burning your film to dvd. Google around for DVDCopy and that will give you some DVD burning theory

What software are you using to author and burn with? Are you trying to make a DVD Video disc or are you just trying to burn the MPEG file straight to DVD like a data file?

If the mpeg is not dvd compliant, the software will encode it (that why it takes some time) to a dvd compliant file. This usually increases the file size substantially.

That's true... But more than 2x the size? I'm sure it can happen, I've just never had it happen to me, yet.

I read on another forum that the Hauppage cards don't capture DVD compliant video. Something about the screen resolution being incorrect (507x480 vs. 578x480). Those resolution settings are from memory and might be off a little but you get the point. That alone could cause a problem. Also, one hour of DVD quality video typically takes up 4.7 Gigs of space. If you have to re-encode the recording then the problem might be there.

I'm able to put five 30 mins shows on one DVD-R 4.7GB disc (after removing commercials). They are captured with GBPVR (of course) at 6500 VBR.

Just to chip in my pennies worth and hopefully help out a few other users.

On the dvd authoring side it maybe worth checking out the link below this has links and reviews to a number of DVD Authoring packages including free ones.

Users may also like to try out another fantastic free tool DVDShrink which in addition to backing up DVD V Fast and effortlessly can also be used to shrink authored DVD projects back down to 4.7G

Good link.. I forgot to mention that.. I haven't used that site in a few weeks, but a great resource!

DVDShrink is great for fixing those problems, however you have to have an authoring tool let creates ISOs, most do I guess, or you must use something else to take it from DVD-Video to ISO to shrink it. I've searched for some time to find something that would do the compression on the MPEG before I author it to make it fit.

I would run the mpeg2 file you recorded through PVAStrumento (http://www.offeryn.de/dv.htm#pvas) then try authoring it again.
