I really like the Weather Plug-in. I certainly can use it the way that it is right now. But here are a few ideas that I think would improve the weather plug-in.
If you're like me, you live in an area where the weather services usually only provide a simple radar image of your state (or half of your state) that shows about a 200 mile range. That can be a two hour period in many instances. To get a complete idea of what may be coming within the next 24 hours or so, you need to add several more radar sites.

I live in Minnesota and I currently have the weather plugin set up with radar stations to cover: north and south of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and eastern Colorado (weather in Minnesota rarely comes from the east). Along with the radar data, the plugin also downloads the complete forecast information for each of these locations. I would like the weather plugin to limit its data from other locations to just radar images. I would also like to see this radar data on a composite image that comprises all the land within my selected radar image (instead of having to key from radar site to radar site to get the information from all the sites).

Similarly, I would like to see temperature and current condition (rain, cloudy, sun) for some selectable cities within a selectable map area. (for me, that would be the entire state of Minnesota, and then show cities such as Minneapolis, St Paul, Rochester, Albert Lea, Duluth, Fargo, Grand Forks, International Falls, and my home city).

I certainly can use the plug-in the way it is, but in this day of having live weather images that you can zoom in and pan around on, I don't know why the GBPVR plug-in would want to settle for something less.

Thanks

Any developer can take the source code from the wiki and make enhancements. The plugin should be marked as Unsupported, but I haven't had the heart to do so.

Heh... if only I were a (software) developer.. maybe I'd have a job today.

My (usual) employment in Architecture has only to do with the designing of buildings, not software, or computer systems, etc. However, since it looks like it will be a few dozen months before the Architecture market returns....

Maybe if I take a few weeks I can work up enough knowledge to really mess up that plug-in?

I was hoping to get ahold of the Accuweather API and implement it into the Weather plugin. Unfortunately, Accuweather requires you to provide clickable links to their website within the app you use. Makes it hard with an HTPC to do this. I believe the Weather Channel API is the same. I guess you could theoretically provide these links, but then just hope no one clicks on it because you don't want their web browser to open up Smile

Going with an API will make the plugin break a lot less than scraping.

I'm curious to how MediaCenter is allowed to use the Weather Channel API...

I really miss that the weather plugins maps are not longer reliable and recent. Unfortunately I dont have the times and skills necessary to help work on it.

For those that have been looking at APIs have you condisered the Weatherbug API?

Are the sites that expose weather info APIs US specific? If there's a good one that includes other parts of the world (including the UK :p ) then I may be interested.

Here is a short list of weather APIs:
- Accuweather
- Weather Channel
- Weatherbug
- Yahoo! Weather

I've searched around and saw someone had created an "unofficial" Google Weather API. But I think this almost no different from scraping...

As for APIs with radar maps, I think only Accuweather and the Weather Channel provide them for more than the US.

But I know both of them require some sort of linkback to their sites for use of their APIs.

If just a weather condition, minus maps, API is needed, Yahoo! Weather might be our best bet.

I understand the Unsupported thing; its such a great/crucial plugin.

The Weather Bug API is definitely NOT an option:

http://www.weatherbug.com/aws/termsOfUse.html

According to their terms of use, any distributed application would be considered "commercial" (I've underlined the appropriate part):

Quote:Commercial Use
When used for commercial purposes (e.g. derive income, monetary gain or other non-monetary compensation, or distribution of WeatherBug content to consumers to whom you do not have a personal relationship) the use of the WeatherBug Web API must conform to the following:

Now this is the part that kills it as a viable option for the plugin:

Quote:Radar and Satellite Imagery — Thumbnail images (as used herein thumbnail images shall not exceed 100x100 pixels) only, which when clicked will open a browser window and link to the radar and satellite content area of the WeatherBug.com domain. "Animate" and "enlarge" text links must accompany thumbnail images.

100x100 pixels would be pretty useless on an HDTV.

Oh, and then there are the compensation clauses.
