Could I really just plug the hdmi cable from pvr into this, and directly capture into pc? Is there any other devices that permits "on-the-fly" hdmi capture, for pc?

Sorry, thats not compatible with GB-PVR, and even if it was, it could only capture unencrypted signals (ie, from digital video cameras etc, not premium channels from cable/satellite set top boxes).

The best you can currently do for high def capture from a set top box is the HD-PVR, which will capture component video up to 1080i.

Ok, I like what I see. Excuse, I'm a real noob here. :-)

What I'm trying to figure out is, I wanted to switch from satellite SD to satellite HD (Bell ExpressVu in Canada), and since I don't have an hd set top box, I thought recording would go thru hdmi cable. But the device you're showing me here records from COMPONENT signal, so I would presume my would-be hd set top box would have such an output, right? :-)

I already encode LOTS of tv shows, films, hockey games for myself, and I want to be sure if I'd switch to HD, I would be able to capture it too.

Yes.

The HD-PVR creates transport stream .ts files, with H.264 video and either AC3 or AAC audio.

Again, thanks for making it clear. One last question: does it come with an editor, to remove tv-ads let's say? Or what program can edit those .ts ?

I dont know. I've never tried editing .ts files. I typically record them, watch them, then delete them.

Ok... cuz if I can't remove tv-ads, this would be completly useless to me. Sad

Fair enough. I still dont know the answer for you though.

If you want to do HD capture from a set top box though then its the only option.
