when i attempt to play live tv from my client machine, the screen goes blank as if it is about to start, waits for about 2 seconds, then kicks me back to the menu. i can play recorded shows from the server machine, and i can play things from the video library, can see the tv guide and all that, but can't get live tv to start. logs are attached. Help with this would be appreciated

It wasnt able to communicate to the server. This is usually because of firewall software on either the client or the server getting in the way.

i am using zonealarm on both machines, and peergaurdian on the server... i will double check the settings on both machines. what port does it use? do need to make sure a specific port is open? any ideas why i can view recorded shows, but not live tv currently?

That particular communication that was failing was to port 7968 on the server.

I have no idea how you configure either of those firewalls you're using. There is a few different ports involved, so best to just allow those programs to access whatever ports if you can.

It doesnt need to communicate over port 7968 when playing a recording.

I tried disabling all of the firewall software on both machines. still no go, with the same error. any other thoughts? could it be a firewall on my router actively blocking the ports? anything else you can think of?

With the firewall disabled on both machines, reproduce the problem and repost the logs. I'll check if you're still having the same problem.

It still the same problem. The only two things it'll be is either firewall software on one of the two machines is getting in the way, or you've entered an incorrect servername. I'm pretty sure its the firewall though (think you get a slightly different message when it cant find the named machine).

Even though you think you're using other firewall software, I'd check if the built-in Windows firewall has re-enabled itself. It has for some others in the past, leading to much confusion.

i double checked my windows firewall, and they are definitely off on both machines, but i added exceptions for all the gbpvr programs anyway, just in case. Also, in the client config, I changed the server name from the name of the computer to its IP address. This seems to have fixed the "can't Connect" problem, but Live TV still doesn't play. it still kicks me back to the menu, but it takes a little longer, because it looks like it is loading the EPG data from the sever before it quits. Can you tell what is going on now? here are the logs

Is your shares setup correctly?

Its trying to play "\\192.168.10.108\Temp\Laura McKenzies Traveler_1_20090405_08300900-3.mpg". Can the client definitely see that file in that location?
